A quick update on this,
I used the car at the weekend for a local road run/car show. I took a spare battery with me too. The trip of about 60 miles round trip back home. It didn't charge all the way to the show, but during the road run, I noticed the light went out and the ammeter showing charge of around 2 - 5 amps. It continued this for the 30 mile run, back to the show. Although I have done nothing else other what I stated before.
A few hours at the show, on the return journey home. It failed to charge again. I must go back and find that pothole I must have hit!

Hi Alan.Alan wrote:....the brushes all having a fair amount of distance "meat" from their carriers.
1. Do the brushes move easily backwards and forwards in their slides or are they clogged up.
2. Does the fork-spring pressing on the back of the third brush actually do it's job, or is it bearing on some metalwork around it, therefore lessening the 'push'.
3. Does the commutator need a clean with a thin piece of wood with cloth wrapped around it, and dampened with petrol - remove a brush and clean it up if necessary, turn armature using hand on flywheel.
4. Someone once told me that old cut-outs are lazy, and occasionally need a bit of time to waken up!
Otherwise all advice previous to this post should be listened to.

If you need a 3rd brush and JCS don't stock them, I think I have a few in a job lot of brushes I got from ebay a while ago.

Tony, you have hit the nail on the head there. Being lazy. That is what it is seemingly doing now. Being rather late to kick in on a journey so to speak. I have also checked the brush movement, another chap I know did suggest this too. All free and moving.
