Pinion oil seal
Hi everyone, just bought a javelin that has been standing for some time. I've done the usual changes, brakes, hoses and plugs etc. After driving thirty odd miles the car has developed a large oil leak from the pinion seal. I have obtained a new seal via the club but have encountered a couple of problems. Firstly I cannot find in my collection of sockets, one which will fit the central nut on the end of the diff. Does anyone out there know the size of this nut. Secondly, after offering up the seal sent to me by the club, it seems too small. The one provided by the club is two and a half inches in diameter and all rubber. When looking at the end of the diff there appears to be either a large metal washer over the seal or a composite metal and rubber seal. I should be very grateful if someone could explain to me what parts lie behind the central nut and if the seal I have is correct. Many thanks in advance, Tim Fellender

Re: Pinion oil seal
Tim,
The outside diameter of the seal is as the diameter you see on your axle 3 3/16. The inside diameter is 1 9/16 and runs on the inner section of the coupling which you need to remove to replace the seal. The socket you need is 11/16 Whit the nearest metric is 30 mm.
I replaced my Javelin seal in 2010 with a ex.M.O.D. leather seal supplied by JCS and I have never had to top up since.
The thread on the pinion is 3/4 B.S.F. 20 t.p.i.
