Hi folks,
I am in need of a speedometer in kilometers/hour from a Javelin or Jupiter,
does anyone have suggestions as to where I might acquire one please?
Mike Allfrey's technical notes kindly shows this to be
Smiths, X70802/9;
were these instruments also shared on other car makes/models? That might help me.
Many thanks,
Andy

Re: Kph speedometer required
There are various people that can recalibrate speedos and redo facia dials. If you have a speedo case then you could use internals from another speedo.
If you already have a working mph speedometer you only need to repaint the face.
Jup and Jav speedos are different. I have a kph speedo fitted to my SA used on rallies and still have the original mph. So could compare when I get back from NZ.

Thanks Keith,
Technical notes list X70802/9 as speedo for both Jav and Jup,
so are they different or recalibrated?
Repainting the dial is an option but I feel sourcing a second Kph would be better.
Do any of the afficianodos know how many TPM (turns per mile) the original works at?
Or if another make used the speedo?
Thanks
A.

Re: Kph speedometer required
Hi, there are at least four different versions of speedos fitted to Javelins. At least from their front visible aspect. The early Javelins had square speedos recessed into a metal dash, the slightly later deluxe ones had recessed speedos behind the wooden dash, the later Javelins had speedos with chrome bezels surface mounted on the wooden dash and the proper Standard ones ( not the early Javelins, which were not Standard's at all, despite what Class E in the Concour's suggests! ) had the speedo surface mounted on the metal dash with a chrome bezel. I have heard that the instruments from the final Standard's were identical to those going to be used on the CD. I guess Jowett's had 'forward bought' some CD stock and wanted to use them up on the Standard's?
As for Jupiter's, I have seen the recessed wooden dash type on SA's and a completely different, much larger, surface mounted type on the metal dash SC's.
Having said that, I am unsure whether the internals were the same across any of the versions? My suspicions are that the very early one's were unique and the later round speedos shared the same internals?
As for getting one in KPH, I suggest getting the scale on one of the right type for your car recalibrated in KPH. I would never trust ( or like looking at! ) my handiwork in hand-painting the face! Ugh!
Hope this helps,
David
