Rear mudguards.

Post by Forumadmin »

Needing to protect body work from flying balance weights and stones I used a pair of 16 inch trailer mudguards.

This shows the view at the top of the wheel arch. The mudguards are a good fit and really do not need fixing but I put a couple of stainless self tappers through to the inner wing.

This is the view at the back which should protect the rear amps and bumpers that always fill with dirt.

Image
This shows the front section where I cut the mudguard to accommodate the narrowing of the wheel arch. It also allows any muck that does get up there to escape.

The other side was done differently and provides a flatter surface but not quite such a good seal. The moved section was cut off in line with the wheel arch.

Before and after fitting I checked the clearance at the bump stop and all around the wheel.

This is the narrowest point with still 6 cms of clearance.

On the topic of rear mudguards, does anyone know of a source of the stone protectors on the leading edge of the rear wings? Mine are missing and it is clear why the protectors are needed, as there are quite a number of paint chips.

I need the later type in ribbed rubber (oo err missus!).

I think they detract from the car's looks. You can reduce chipping by fitting mud flaps on the front bulkhead which I did on the rallying SA after a LeJog rally had brightly polished the underside in its forest stages. An alternative is to fit aluminium protectors or some of the transparent film used on the front of modern cars.
Chips occur above where they are fitted anyway and on the bonnet, so a regular touch up and 5 yearly re-spray is probably necessary to keep the car looking good after you have been enjoying it.

Thanks Keith. A question of personal preference I suppose. I've always liked the stone protectors as they set the car so well in period. You can find similar protectors on French sportscars of the late 30's/40's (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Delahaye_ ... urtout.jpg) -and they are not the sort of thing you would find on a slightly later car, like an MGA or an A-H, because the differentiation of the rear wing has disappeared.

I'll keep looking, but I was also wondering if it would be possible to heat-form some flat ribbed rubber sheet -like that used on running boards.

Thanks Alf -if truth be known, my father does have a spare set of aluminium protectors, which I could probably persuade him to part with. I quite like the less flashy rubber ones, however and wondered if anyone was having them made...
