Could anyone tell me where I can get the 1 inch wide leather belt and fastener needed to go between the propshaft and the speedo gear contraption, please?

the leather belt could be an ordinary trouser belt (of a suitable length and wldth) and I usually sew the ends together with a tapered splice when I replace this type of belt on my lathe.

Using the metal comb-type fasteners will give rise to a potentially annoying (or possibly reassuring!) click every rev!
The devil is in the detail!

Found lathes.co.uk on the internet and they are supplying me with a belt made of a modern, more durable material and the alligator clips to go with it. The chap was very helpful and knew the speedo set up - he used to trial an Austin 7 and Jowetts were always the opposition!

Hi I need a new belt as well, do you have the name of the person you spoke to at lathes.co.uk or any other order details that I can use.

Thanks Nick.

Hi Nick, I think they're only a small concern and the chap I spoke to was quite knowledgable regarding our cars as he used to trial Austin 7s in the VSCC. I ended up with a belt made of some modern material which will do the same job but shouldn't stretch so easily - thick leather is apparently difficult and costly to obtain. I think it was about £20-25.

Hi many thanks, I have just spoken to a lovely lady at Lathes and she said to call back and speak to her husband Tony as he will be able to help me.

Cheers Nick.

Tony Griffiths, excuse spelling if incorrect, swept the board in the VSCC and won everything 3 years on the trot, in a Austin7 Chummy.

I use an Austin 7 fan belt on my 1924 Short 2. Magneto ignition type.
Slightly too short I has to put a couple of washers behind each mount, until it stretches.

Can anyone tell me what the spring should look like which holds the speedo drive contraption in position - I would think it is designed to hold it down to prevent the pulley rubbing the underside of the floor. At the moment I have secured it down with cable ties!
