As an aside to the engine rebuild in progress, I'm taking the opportunity to sort the dynamo which has never worked. JCS have rebuilt units on the shelf, but they were all 6 volt, so I decided to make one good one out of two, using parts from I got from Tony and the unit off the car. I sent the field coils, armature and suspect cut out off to Paul at Smart Power, as recommended by Daniel Banham and I have to say I am very chuffed with the results. The armature was tested and turned out to be ok, so has been stripped and the insulation renewed.
The field coils on both dynamos looked pretty shot, but again Paul was happy they could be saved and stripped, cleaned, re insulated and then built up properly in the barrel.
The cut out coil was less lucky. Apparently, inside the thick coil you see on the outside of the solenoid is a second coil of very fine wire. Rewinding it is around £150, so it's been replaced by an electronic module for £50, as I'm looking for reliability, so wasn't keen to risk an equally old second hand one ....................... or paying 150 quid to be honest!
I'm building it up with modern sealed bearings, so hopefully it should have a long and happy new life in front of it. Paul is a very friendly helpful chap (and likes to chat about motorbikes as a bonus) and I would recommend him without hesitation for any electrical work. I had just assumed I'd need to bite the bullet and have everything rewound, but his restoration techniques look beautiful and have saved around £300

The electronic cut out module fits neatly in the old case, so probably the best of all worlds. No one need ever know.

Hi Barry, I am pleased you also had good results with Paul at Powersmart.
I also put sealed bearings in the dynamo, which are working well and help keep the distributor gear oil in the right place. I found it difficult to work out how much oil to put in the dynamo gear chamber and then how to keep it at the correct level, any clues?
