Vintage exhaust

Post by k. rogers »

Having problems finding an exhaust fabricator who can supply 1.25 inch mild steel pipe. Does anyone know of an off the shelf system which could be adapted for a vintage short chassis? The Morris Minor exhaust looks promising!

Hello Ken.
There was a lot of discussion on:- Jowett Kestrel Rebuild & Restoration - Julian's post of the long-running saga of his pre-war Kestrel restoration.
e.g. - Jan 16th 2015 (Ian H): Jan 13th 2015: May 22 2015 etc.
Perhaps a call to Julian will help.
I put 'morris' in the search box of the first page of JowettTalk and a lot of posts came up. There may be some other ones about exhausts.
Tony.

Thanks Tony, it would appear that if the vintage Y-pipe is the same bore as the pre-war (I will measure) then the Morris Minor system could be adapted and is readily available. I will report back once I know for sure.

Hi Ken

I cheated and went for a side exit exhaust, just in front of the rear wheel, but it might be a problem on a short chassis. I had problems due to having the wrong engine, so the standard Y pipes wouldn't fit. I was also a bit worried by the twist on the chassis putting a strain on the exhaust, but solved both problems by using flexible exhaust connectors, which might help you join the various pieces of whatever you end up with. I found on ebay some really quite neat ones with proper sleeves. I slotted the sleeves and used a smear of sealant and some decent band clamps and it looks a treat. Someone did later point out the car is missing it's side skirts, so normally you wouldn't see the system anyway! When you order, you select a length and diameter which helps and I think I only paid 6 or 7 quid which seemded pretty reasonable.

I used a Morris Minor pipe when I did mine - the bends had to be relocated and I made up a Y pipe using the flanges that came with the car.

The whole thing is solid throughout and I hung it with flexible ;inks onto the chassis cross members.

Itg sounds OK too.

Interestingly enough, if the vintage exhaust is the same as the pre war. I used a silencer from a Robin Reliant on mine it was same and shape and near to the size of a pre war one.

Hi Alan, that's what Geoff told me he used on his vintage, but when I enquired with a chap on ebay he thought the pipes entering the silencer were 38mm which would be too big - perhaps he was wrong! Would you know the actual size of the pipes on your silencer?

A chap at Regis Exhausts has got back to me with dimensions, so I think I am going with the Reliant Rialto silencer and Morris Minor tail pipe, as it looks like it might have the right geometry over the rear axle. I just hope I can join them satisfactorily.

Just an update - I used a Reliant Rialto silencer from which I had to cut off a good 5 inches off the exit pipe to link up to the Morris tail pipe. That also had to be cut lengthwise, but fits beautifully over the rear axle. In the end I used an internal sleeve made from the 4 inches i removed from the Y-pipe to join the silencer to the Morris rear pipe. I now have to find some hangers for the tail pipe and a short length to put in the end. The standard short chassis had a tail pipe which carried on at the same sort of angle I've got, but an original pic of the Sports shows it coming out nearly horizontally, so I will need it with a bend.
