Sold for £4830 including premium.

Out of interest I went along to view this car on the Friday before the sale. Although in general the car was in need of "improvement" the basic body structure had much to commend it. I note in the vehicle records that it has been maroon since at least 1982 but the paint is now showng signs of distress in terms of water blisters and it will definitely need a re-spray. The paint was chipped off in places revealing what - given the lighting restrictions - looked like Golden Sand. Funnily enough it also appeared not to have been rubbed down in these places so the maroon paint has done well actually. If I am reading my Jowetteer records correctly, this could be the third owner in nearly as many years after a very long period with the same owner. This could be a really nice car. I hope the new owner avails himself of the knowledge of the JCC. For example I noted that the water pump has had attention, but has been fitted incorrectly.

Your interest in the forum: Have long had an interest in classic cars and have owned, maintained, improved and driven a 1971 MGB for the last six years. Now about to sell that, as I have just bought a 1953 Jowett Javelin - a car that I have long wished to own, being the first of my father's cars that I have any memory of.
Hope to use the forum for technical advice, general information and making contact with other Javelin owners. Intend to join JCCUK.

Hi there, this is just to let you know that I am the new owner of this 1953 Javelin (YMK 286)...it arrived yesterday on a transporter, in very wet conditions. Battery was flat, so had to enlist some unsuspecting helpers to push it round to the back lane and into my garage. My wife has now 'driven' it further than I have.
An overnight charge of the battery and a general drying off enabled me to get it started and do an initial inspection. Although the paintwork is decidedly rough, the overall solidity and lack of rust seems remarkable for a 64 year old car.
(Same age as me, to within the week - a birthday present to myself!)
I have long been a fan of the Javelin - the first of my father's cars that I have any memory of - and finally decided to do the deed, despite having yet to sell the 1971 MGB roadster that I have been restoring for the last six years.
More anon, and I shall certainly welcome any technical advice - Nick, I would really appreciate further elaboration on the incorrectly assembled water pump. As a starter, it looks as if there is a problem with the charging system: continual discharge showing on the ammeter. No ignition light glow, but the odometer illuminates (the only panel light that does) so perhaps an ill fitted bulb, or swapped connection? Will have to investigate further before driving.....Dynamo, control box and general wiring, some of which is needless to say decidedly dodgy after so many years. So, plenty to be getting on with - my cheque and application for membership is now in the post!

Ken: -

Welcome aboard! I had similar problems many years ago with the charging system on a Bradford I owned in the 1960s and later on one of my Javelins. I also saw a similar problem a year or so ago on a Javelin owned by Ian Roxborough.

On the back of the voltage regulator box (nearest the bulkhead panel), electrical connections are by means of brass strips that are rivetted to the various terminal posts on the front of the box.

These rivetted connections corrode internally over time and this causes invisible but serious dodgy connections.

A solution is to clean up the exposed surfaces around the rivet joints and then solder over them to give a good connection.

Actually, in my Bradford one of the strips had fractured. The crack was VERY hard to find but a soldered loop of wire across the crack fixed the problem.

Good luck with the recommissioning of your Javelin.

Hello Ken and welcome to the club.

As related in the post above, I looked at what is now your car at King's Lynn. It was attracting quite a bit of interest - but Javelins tend to do that even though those gathered around them have no intention of buying.

The issue with the water punp is quite minor really. The two rear stays should not be tightened right down (as they are at present). The official workshop manual rather glosses over this point, but it is mentioned in the JCC Javelin Technical Manual which I think is available somewhere on the JCC website. If they are tight then it can lead to excessive vibration and at worst fracturing of the stays. Thakeray washers should be used between the stay and the block (if you are not familiar with these, thay are a fairly soft double spring washer. A Google search will bring them up). The JCC handbook mentions fastening the stays down with Oddie nuts which should not be tightened. Oddie nuts are are a slightly old fashioned alternative to the common or garden Nyloc nut. Personally, while I trust self locking nuts to be secure, it is on the basis that they are tight down; I do not trust them to not move on a random length of thread. Accordingly, the studs for my stays are drilled for split pins and I use catellated nuts. I would like to say I thought of this but I have seen others like this. I like quite a lot of give at the fan end - providing the hoses and the front stay are in good order (as appeared on your car) then there is no trouble at all.

One other thing I noticed was that the gear lever seemed abnormally stiff. Having followed the advertisements for this car before it turned up at Kings Lynn I have a feeing it may have been off the road for a while and "recomissioned" in the past couple of years. Perhaps it has not had the real TLC it deserves and an oil can around all the linkages will not go amiss. Alternatively - the linkage is adjustable and maybe someone has overdone it. It should not be that tight.

As you have already observed - pity about the paint, but I think that problem is more than out weighed by what in my brief examination seems to be a very good underframe. And that counts for so much with Javelins.

Good luck with the car.
