1933 crankshaft end float.

Post by Tony Fearn »

Tonight I've found that the flywheel on the Flying Fox's engine moves backwards and forwards about 1/16th of an inch. This seems to be excessive.
I think that it is crank-based, and not a loose flywheel as when I push the flywheel forward, the starter dog at the front moves the same amount.
Does it really matter? Any suggestions?
Tony.

I have come across that sort of end float many times way back and as long as it is not knocking it may be ok particularly on a low annual mileage old car that is not driven hard. It is however well over prescribed limits of I think around 6 thou!

Thanks George.
I hope you won't be upset when I tell you that I rang our erstwhile Technical Information Officer, Mike Kav..., and he concurred.
I needed to know because I'm hoping to use 'Sarah Jane' for the trip to and from Peebles, and didn't want to involve the A.A!
And no, it's not knocking.....yet.
Tony.

Not in the least Tony - a second opinion is always a good idea or perhaps sometimes the best out of three!
