fuel pump

Post by billyjowett »

hi guys' i'm new in here (so please be gentle)
i've just got a javelin (yay!)
drove it round for a few days with a slight oil leak, well actually i did about 200 miles.
fixed the oil leak and, woe is me, she wont run properly
well runs then dies off
so electronic ignition fitted. wireing checked, but still not right.
my question is has anyone fitted an electric fuel pump?
if so what pump, how tricky was it, and is it running ok
thanks for reading
bill

Fuel pump reconditioning kits are available from the club. Less trouble than fitting an electric pump.

If you have fitted electronic ignition, are you sure it is set up correctly? Once again the original points are easier to get working correctly. Make sure you have correct polarity on everything.

oh, the ingition is set up right. we had problems with intermitant spark so, rather that search the web for condencer and points, we just put on the more reliable ectronic system. ok it cost twice as much, but it should be maintance free. oh and it gives a GOOD heathly spark. so off to rebuild/refurb pump now. i'll let you know what happens!!

I am successfully running my PA Javelin with a electric fuel pump ,even after refurbishing the mechanical pump the engine would loose power over half throttle . John Airey of Severn Section located this one for me ,it is fitted in the engine bay and sucks from the tank .it has been on the car for 18months and have traveled about 800 miles.
Keith is right if a rebuild can be done it's better to keep as original as poss
have just purchased a javilin and will need all the help i can get

The Jav pump has a manual lever for priming. If operating this pressurises the system and fills the empty carb float chambers in half a dozen pumps , I suspect the problem lies in the carbs or pintel valve. The pump does contain valves which may be worn or contaminated.

Electronic pumps are fickle on Jowetts in my experience . They may suffer from the unregulated power supply and heat from exhaust or engine bay. This is speaking from experience on the Monte Carlo rally and the Alaska trip!

Check the valves are in correctly. Does it pump by hand still?

Hello Bill.

I've been there, with my pre-war saloon 'Mary Ellen' a few years ago. Nothing was going right.

Two phrases spring to mind:-

1. Nil desperandum - don't despair.

But much more erudite, and important, from a very good friend and long-time JCC member is the second phrase:-

2. "Tony, don't worry. It's a machine - it can be mended"!

Keep your pecker up.

Tony.

ok, the saga continues.
so pump checked and re-fitted. hand prime works, fuel gets to carb (yey!)
still doesn't want to start. spare battery attached and try again, she starts!!!!
tidy up my tools and she's running for about 15 min (so more than just what's in the resevior!!)
remove jump leads, still running. (making this look easy ;-) )
let's try re-starting, but no :-( starter wont engage and turn
reconect spare then. wait a second, why is the battery clamp warm? was that a spark? ok let's try removing the clamp and putting jump leads back on.
well it's running again. disconnect the spare battery, still running. bit ragged but still running, lets try the lights, whooow, that almost died.
so have i had a short all along? right then, into the wiring it is then.
wish me luck, and if you don't hear anything from me in the next fortnight please arrange a search party. i'm starting with the dials
bye for now......

Disconnect battery, connect ohm meter across battery connections with ignition and all switches off. You should have a high resistance above 1 Mohm. That is unless you have the clock working so disconnect that. Now switch on circuits particularly side lights and check the resistance is greater than 20 ohms. If not, check circuit.
Check resistance of earth circuit from engine block to earth battery terminal. Should be less than 1 ohm.

well, new battery fitted and clamp rebuilt. thinking of keith's advice, out comes ameter. does it work? no, it doesn't flat battery? nope internal fuse? nope :-(
so after a trip to get said fuse. fit battery, and, wait for it.... yes, she starts!!!! not first time but she did start.
mate comes along with a gadget he bought in lidl, tests battery and alternator at the teminals (i know, alternator, but it's at the terminalss so it should be DC there, surely?)
battery is ok (i should hope so, it's new!) but not charging. so the pal who was hepling me before adjusted the dynamo, i wonder if he knocked something loose?
well, there's always tomorrow!!!

Do you have alternator or dynamo? They have very different circuits. Search on Jowett.Net .
