Help please on a 1923 short two
Hi everyone, my name is Nick Siminson and I have just taken delivery of a 1923 short two ( I cant post a photo at the moment as this site tells me the photo is too big and I am having trouble making it smaller !) anyway I would like to know if anyone has a wiring diagram for this car please. Many thanks Nick.

Nick:-
A warm welcome to Jowett.net! Good to see another vintage Jowett coming back to life.
The wiring is pretty simple and I sm sure there are wiring diagrams on the Gallery. Others will explain how!
Do you know the chassis and/engine numbers as Jowett's were famous/infamous for continually changing details and this might well include 1923 models.
I will keep an eye on this series of post and if you get stuck I can help with a later diagram which would probably be enough of a guide.
As an aside. Can you say which part of the country you live in? I assume UK but there are a number of early cars on mainland Europe and in Australia and New Zealand. If we know roughly where you are there may be a club member local to you who MIGHT be able / willing to help!
Happy Jowetteering,
Ian Howell, Eastbourne

Re: Help please on a 1923 short two
Hi Ian,
Thank you for your reply, I live in Teynham in Kent which is near Faversham. The engine number is 41713 not sure of the chassis number but will have a look for that. It was owned by a friend of mine for many years but not been on the road since 1999, I am picking it up with a trailer on Wednesday and taking it to a local engineering firm to have it "looked over". Our plan is to get it back on the road so that I can take my friend out for a drive which is what he did for me 35 years ago, he is sadly too old now to drive it.

The Club handbook for pre-war cars is in the Gallery here.
There is not a wiring diagram but there is information on setting up the dynamo charge rate.

Hello Nick and welcome to the forum.
I see from your profile that you've already joined the Jowett Car Club UK.
I've had a look through my archives but do not have a copy of an early vintage wiring diagram, but the poor quality scan of a 1929 short two diagram may give you some clues. There must be a 1923 diagram in some member's stuff, so perhaps a 'wanted ad' in the Jowetteer magazine might elicit a response as not many members choose to look at JowettTalk as yet.
I've also scanned some photo copies from someone's 1923 handbook that I took about 20 years ago.
Regards,
Tony.

Nick:-
As you may already know from the membership list that you got when you joined the club, there are other members in Faversham who I used to know many years ago.
Then at least they owned a Javelin and they may later have owned earlier cars. Either way I am sure they would be pleased to make contact with another Jowetteer.
How goes the resurrection? I have now got my car back from the upholsterers so I will be looking to make more use of it next year - bit late/cold for this year!
I will post photos once I have got them down to a size that will 'fit'.
(Tony, that also applies to the side valve spring compressor)

Re: Help please on a 1923 short two
Thank you Tony and Ian, many thanks for your replies. The wiring diagram was very helpful.
I have made contact with the members in Faversham ( not difficult as they run a pub!)
The car is now back on the road after a thorough check over by a very good local engineering company, I have taken it out for a few runs and starting to get the gear changes a little smoother...great fun to drive and putting a smile on a lot of peoples faces.
I need to get a new battery box, so if any knows where to get one please let me know otherwise I will probably build one myself.
Here is a photo of it outside my house.

Re: Help please on a 1923 short two
The wiring diagram, as with the 1930 diag in the Pitman book, shows the 3rd brush directly linked to another. On other makes the field winding is connected between the output and the 3rd brush, which can be moved to be adjacent the earth brush. Te arrangement is a bit more complex with 4 pole dynamos as the main brushes are at 90 deg. Perhaps someone who has tinkered with the dynamos can expalin the diagrams. (Similalrly the 1930-35 diags show the 3rd brush adjacent the output brush, not the earth brush?)

Nick:-
The next time you see Clive and Angela, pass on my best wishes and tell them that Karen, who Angela knitted a jumper for, has her own pub in mid-Wales now. I plan to visit them when it gets abit warmer.
Keep up the good work! Are you having problems with the dynamo? They sometimes just lose interest after a long break, but will come back to life eventually or you can try a 'hot' wire from a known live source just 'dabbed ' onto the field terminal. Once sorted, the charge rates will probably be OK but can easily be adjusted if necessary.
Keep tinkering!

Thanks Ian, not having any problems with the dynamo, I don't think i said anything about that! anyway all going well at the moment. I am planning a trip to see Clive and Angela if the weather keeps fine, it's not far from me but taking it one step at the time at the moment. If I go I will pass on your message. Cheers Nick.

Re: Help please on a 1923 short two
I mentioned the dynamo because an interest was expressed in the wiring diagram, and dynamo matters are often the first to prompt reference. I supect the field connection depiction is wrong and have mentioned this before but no one has ever confirmed? To effectively short circuit a portion of the armature does not seem logical.

Re: Help please on a 1923 short two
Bob (and Nick!):-
My misunderstanding (as usual) about the dynamo.
Bob - I think you are right about the dynamo connections in the diagram being wrong. When I rewired my 1930 Saloon I spent a lot of time re-drawing the diagram with different colours for the wires just to make them easier to follow - not colour coded as such although there are signs that the cables to the dynamo and cut-out may have been colour coded in production.
Once again I am away from home so I don't have access to my records but when I get back I will try to post here, or send you direct, copies of my diagram - which is correct insofar as it works, and also my explanation of the charging system, which again works and is logical. These are for the three brush dynamo system.
A lot of my research was based on information from Tony F, so thanks to him - yet again! The rest came from Lucas drawings and various in-period textbooks.
Should be home by Saturday 14th -if you can wait that long!
Keeeep tinkering!
