It's back!

Post by ian Howell »

Tonight I took re-delivery of my fabric saloon after only 13 months with the upholsterers.

It started 'first pull' on the handle and on the button once warmed. It looks pretty good apart from the front wings which have not been touched since the Centenary Rally.

Drove home 13 miles with no problems but one brake drum was a bit warm. Back to fettling tomorrow!

The wings can wait as I want to investigate poor compression in the offside cylinder.

Congratulations! Do you have pictures? I'll be interested in your investigation of your compression issues as we are hopefully stripping our engine in the next couple of weeks.

Barry:-

When I started the car after its period of arrested depreciation there was very little compression on the offside cylinder. It did start however and seemed to run fairly smoothly.

When I got it home ,(13 mile run) the compression was better but still a bit lopsided.

Today I took out that plug and it was a healthy pink and the compression is still 'up' but still a bit uneven.

The tappet clearances are OK snd there is no sign of oil burning (no blue smoke) so I suspect that
the exhaust valve is a bit weak.

That means a head off, and that means draining the radiator and possibly tilting the engine.

That means taking off the exhaust and the radiator hoses and that means . .. ...

What it means for now is that I will leave the problem until I feel really fed up.

Meanwhile I hope to just USE the car for a few weeks and probably leave deep fettling until next year.

Happy Christmas everyone!

I don't know pre war cars but a Bradford on uneven cylinders is a recipe for a broken crank....
Bradfords also have an inspection/service port in the mudguard makes valve grind easy.
Good memories of Bradfords.

David:-

Thanks for your interest - it isn't just me that is watching this post! Incidentally, I started with a derelict '48 Bradford when I was at college in Liverpool in 1963 - great fun!

Sadly there is no such panel in the wing, but in any event it's the chassis member that gets in the way!

Interesting/frightening about the risk to crankshafts. The imbalance problem seems to be reducing as I run the engine. Possibly just having a moody for not being used for so long!

I really do need to get the engine out. My only engine repairs have been a good clean, a new oil relief valve piston, 1 new piston ring (Skoda Estelle) and regrind the valves. I have had so little use of the car during 50 years of ownership including 12 years of repairs that I want to indulge myself for a while.

Keep us formed of your progress though, it's good to know that we struggle together!

Happy Jowetteering!
