This may be of interest to early pre-war owners:-

Caveat emptor, i.e. have a good look. Check the engine number in photo 2 etc.

Re: Pre-war items on eBay.
Hi Tony
I'd seen this and was going to contact the chap, but I'll only bid if no one more local is interested and he is happy for me to arrange a "man and van" to collect it and my Uncle is happy to store it, or he can wait a couple of weeks for me to get up and visit family and friends.
The selectors on my gearbox are worn and I though it would be useful to have a spare box. However, mine has the catch on the lever you pull up for reverse and the casting around the ball looks slightly different. Do you think this could be a 3 speed box?

Hello Barry.
I'm pretty sure that the eBay gearbox is a 3 speed.
As you say, the 4 speed gearbox has a fail-safe-reverse-lever.
Here's a photo of my '34 short saloon's gearbox lid, and it's a four speed box. Tony.

Hi Tony
Yours is identical to mine. Shame, as a spare box could have been useful, but apart from the selectors, mine is nice and quiet and works well, so I'm sure I can improve things when the engine comes out. Given the engine number, could this have some from a postwar Bradford?

Re: Pre-war items on eBay.
Hello Barry.
The engine number looks like 540622 which makes the engine a 1935 pre-war model.
The associated box would have had four forward gears as we discussed.
When you say the selectors are worn, do you mean that the gear lever action is rather like stirring a pudding, or have you actually looked inside the box?
The little bolt on the side of the turret (see my photo below) fits into a milled slot with parallel sides on the ball of the gear lever.
This, when new kept the gear shift in a tight H pattern.
After years of use, the end of the bolt wears, as does the slot, and this allows the lever to 'stir round'.
The drawing below will give you some idea. Tony.

Re: Pre-war items on eBay.
Hi Tony. My mistake, I didn't realise it was just the first number denoting the year. Min starts 43 .. so I assumed you reversed the first two digits!
I haven't investigated the box at all, but looking at your drawing, I think this is the problem. Not helped by the actual casting being worn where the reverse latch rubs. I was going to machine this flat at some stage and screw on a wearing plate. I was going to change the gearbox oil, so I will have a look. It will have to wait though, as I'm just packing for a couple of weeks away
