Preventing corrosion in trafficator pockets

Post by 114 »

I'm wondering if there are any drainage arrangements in these areas as water can obviously get in when the car is washed or rained on?
If not, will drilling up through the sill area directly below the trafficator provide drainage?
In any event I'm planning to 'waxoyl' the pocket area.
Many thanks
Roger

As far as I know there is no provision for weatherproofing. The water and salt can digest the whole of the pillar and hinges quite happily.
The answer would be to construct a plastic moulding to seal off, with just a hole for the arm entry.

Thanks Keith
That sounds a good plan, however in the short term I plan to wax treat the whole structure there, vua the trafficator slot, using Bilt - Hamber Dynax S50 which I find excellent. Never the less I'm not familliar with the internal structure in detail though, so would a hole drilled into the sill from below allow this area to drain water that would otherwise accumulate or is the pocket boxed in above sill level (making such a drilling ineffective) do you happen to know?
Many thanks
Roger

Thanks Keith, I imagine the Javelin must be the same in this respect?

The Jupiter uses the same trafficator but access is easier through the panel at the front of the scuttle. Here are the Javelin pictures. On a Jupiter simply drill some holes at the lowest spot to let out any water.
On our SC Jupiter I did fill in the holes before respray. OK we loose some points in the concourse but the car will not rust inside the scuttle.
On our SA Jupiter the trafficators still work but I do not use them as I have indicators fitted. I prefer not to worry about a modern driver who has never seen that funny thing popping up on the side of a car. The kids and grown ups love them when they see them working though. One answer may be to use the flashing LED festoon bulbs that are now available as direct replacements.

Here are the pictures.ImageImageImage
 Click on the thumbnails that were selected from the Gallery (Hinges album in the Technical, Javelin section) using the g2img button. Really easy to use if you want to link images into a post.
The first is a view looking down the pillar from inside the car.
The second looking at the hinge hole on an unrestored shell showing metal maggot damage.
The third on a restored shell where you should drill a hole beyond where the rubber bung sits. I suggest a hole top and bottom of square tube.

Keith, thanks for both the advice and the photos. Unfortunately the site denies me access to these saying that this is unauthorised. I've tried signing on to Jowett.net main page, so be glad of any suggestions. Otherwise if you get chance to tack them on to an email the address is rrogchaplin'at'aol.com.
Regards using the teafficators, initial plan to get 114 on the road (been doing lots if recommissioning bits & pieces in amongst other things) is to instal the flashing festoon-fitting LED's, then devise a neat methid of installing separately switched flashing indicators. Plan so far is to put twin amber and white LED bulbs into the front sidelight units thus leaving the appearance as designed, but We're currently undecided at the rear. Probably something podded mounted on the over rider fixings. 114's body is really superb, so I'm reluctant to make holes in the spare wheel door (for example) unless absolutely necessary. That said, I'd be glad of any suggestions here also!
BTW, would you pass my & Kim's best wishes to Amy who was kind enough to spend a lot of time with us at the PC Restoration show shiwing us round her SC.

Hi Roger,
You can send Amy an email using the site, but I will see her in an hour and will pass on wishes.
Regarding viewing images on the site. You need to be a club member to view Items in the technical library (which is where those images are) and I have not received notification from the JOAC membership sec that you say you have joined. Please ask Dave to email me.
You should have seen a red message informing you of this when you logged on.
