I am new here. 3D Bradford
Hi all,
I am new to this forum. I am here because I am building a 3D Jowett Bradford.
I have photos of a real Jowett, who is owned by our friend, but unfortunately he lives a long way away from us, and I didn't get enough photos to help me complete my model.
I am not sure if I can post images here, but if I can I will show my current progress.
Anyway hello all.

Front Door Hinges on a Jowett Bradford Van
Hi all,
I am building a 3D Jowett Bradford Utility Van.
Can somebody explain to me how the hinges work on the van.
Normally hinges have to be in a straight line on a pivot point.
However on the Bradford the bottom hinge comes out a lot further than the top hinge.
So how does the door open if there are 2 pivot points on the hinges.
I can post a picture if you want but I assume most of you know what a Jowett Bradford van looks like

Re: Front Door Hinges on a Jowett Bradford Van
The hinge pins are in vertical alignment so they pivot as a normal set of hinges.
The flap lengths are different (shorter on the top) to accommodate the curve in the body,
The body may look parallel but is actually narrower at the bottom than the waist line
So if you take an edge profile line from the body door jamb or the door and rotate it through 90deg centered on the hinge pin it will remain the same distance away from the pivot point

Re: Front Door Hinges on a Jowett Bradford Van
Hi Steve,
Thanks. I suspected as much. Unfortunately I have worked from photographs and I have built my door straighter than it really is.
I have also done all the inside texturing so it might be very hard to change the model at this point.
Hmm it is a shame, as I was trying to make it as accurate as possible, but I might have to bend on this little problem.
Now I am going to see what I can do, to make these hinges work.

Re: Front Door Hinges on a Jowett Bradford Van
Hi Steve,
Here is my progress so far. It is nearly complete except for the hinges. I had a go at putting more curvature at the top earlier and I messed up the model completely. Will have another go later.
The big problem is that I have already textured the inside, but it would be a shame if I can't get the hinges better.
I have been working on this model on and off for 2 years. The real car is in Morcambe, and I live in Dudley, so I have been working from photos completely.
I have had to stop short of creating every bolt heh heh, as the polygon count is nearly up to 6 million polygons now.

Close to what my second Bradford looked like.
Good memories of Bradfords.

Re: Front Door Hinges on a Jowett Bradford Van
Hi George,
There is no such thing as scale in computer graphics. Everything is scaled by my eye. A 3d model could be 5 feet in length or 5 miles in length and could still look correct.
The problem with this is that my eye is not always accurrate, which is why I didn't see the curvature in the door.
I am using 3ds max to model the car. It is software they actually used in the Terminator movies.
To build an accurate representation of the car I would have had to use cad software like inventor, but then I would need accurate measurements, which I have not been able to get hold of, apart from a few tech sheets that I have read.
All I had to build the model was a series of photographs that I took last time I was in Morcambe.
So consider the model more art than a totally accurate representation.
However apart from that I am trying my hardest to keep to the spirit of the original car.

Can you not use images taken from three projections in both directions on each axis with reference points to build an accurate 3d representation? Or with laser scanning do the job in a matter of seconds.

Re: Front Door Hinges on a Jowett Bradford Van
Hi Keith,
That is called photogrammetry. I have experimented with it in the past and it does not do a very good job with some objects, eg cars. Mainly because of glass does not work with photogrammetry.
It is great for doing sculptures which are small, but not very good for cars. For instance you have to take at least 40 odd photos from every angle, even overhead, which is not very practical if you can't get higher than the car. Then you get deformations and holes in the mesh.
Also the resulting mesh can be a right mess, and almost impossible to texture very well.
Plus I wouldn't have the joy of actually building a whole model from scratch in 3D.
Also I only had a short time to take pictures of the car. I live 130miles away from where the car is, so it isn't easy for me to pop back and take more photos.
Annoyingly even though I took lots of photos of the original car, there is a lot I didn't get a photo of.
I did get some reference pictures from this website however.
PS. Photogrammetry would also not work on the interior of the car. It would be impossible to take a proper 360 degree view of the inside of the Bradford.

Hi Asimov
That is an excellent piece of modeling, and nice rendering,
If you would like to look at the real thing a bit closer then send me a pm.
I live 5 miles away in Wordsley.
Although mine has been converted to a drop side lorry it is original up to the back of the doors.
Just re read your earlier post as to the software that you are using so have removed my question.

Can the resultant polygon file be processed to create moving images? That would look good on the website!
Similar to Moises' Spanish Jowett Website.

Re: I am new here. 3D Bradford
Hi Forumadmin,
Yes but there are many ways of doing this. I could animate a rotating camera around the Bradford and render out stills, or I could render to webm video, which is a web video.
Obviously there is also flash, but that is an old standard now.
It will be a few weeks before I finish it, but when I do you are quite welcome to have as many stills as you want.
Or if you wish me to turn it into anything web related I may be able to do that as well. It depends on your requirements.
I actually do web design at work, and 3D is just a hobby.
@split pin: there is something I need to see a bit closer. The Jowett I am modelling had a few pieces missing at the time I took the photos. So I am missing an accelator pedal. I will show you a photo. If you have an image of the accelerator pedal I could add that. Here is the photo.
regards
Thomas
