1953 Javelin engine access.
Could someone please help Bob (aka tigermoth) get to his front spark plugs.
He's new to Jowetts and has a 1953 Javelin, and has posted his request in the 'JOWETTTALK TIPS' section rather than in this section.
His topic post is headed - engine access.
Thanks,
Tony.

Hi Bob
Lower grille removed on later models via screws between slats.

Re: engine access
There are two screws each side which need a quarter turn to release.

I think these are call Dzus (correct spelling!) fasteners as used on some aircraft.
First lift up or remove the upper part of the grille.
As Keith says, 1/4 turn with a screwdriver (4 places) then be brave and pull the lower grille forwards - be careful if it is stiff - it may come away suddenly.
Happy Jowetteering!

Re: 1953 Javelin engine access.
Yes! So well and good!
But WHAT did you find lurking in the depths of the engine compartment?
Of special interest would be the engine number (stamped on a boss on the front of the crankcase). Is it the same as the chassis number?
If not, does it have an earlier or later number, or does it have an 'R' at the end indicating a reconditioned engine?
Likewise, does the gearbox number end with a 'J'? This indicates a Jowett manufactured item and sadly these are prone to problems, but work well enough for most purposes.
By the way, you CAN (just) change the plugs after removing the relevant front wheel. It gets easier after the first dozen or so attempts! This is not as bad as it sounds as you would want to check the brakes, track rod ends and suspension joints occasionally anyway, so whilst you are there . . .
Any problems - air them here!

Having run 4 Javelins as everyday cars I can categorically say I never had to remove a wheel to get at the plugs!

That is true George, just one of the myths about Javelins, it helps to have the correct type plug spanner.
It is good practice to check for debris in the plug recess if the covers are not fitted.
