Here's another daft question from me! How 'tight' should the nuts (top and bottom) be on the Javelin fan support stays be (one on either side at rear of fan support tube)?
The top nuts on my fan support tube have for some time had what I can only describe as 'double' spring washers fitted below the nuts. I can only assume these were recommended at the time by someone 'in the know'. It could have been Roy Braddock, it is that long ago!

The Thakray washers are not listed in the parts book. The Oddie nuts are. They are there to allow vibrational movement so should not be tightened fully. My advice would be half a turn past when nut first makes contact.
If tight, the vibration will cause fracture of the fan support struts 54333 54334.
It is worth balancing the fan to reduce vibration. Over the years they become bent.
A BETTER SOLUTION IS TO FIT A PLASTIC FAN and save your fingers, wiring and bonnet from sheared blades.

Good tip about , about the fan stays , also mine were just touching the steering arm , did a bit of grinding . But what plastic fan do you recommend , tips on coupling to existing boss etc .

is this true for both top AND bottom nuts OR just the TOP nuts?

The bottom nuts attached to crankcase should be tightened with a flat and spring washer ( or internal fan washer). Use loctite as well, unless you use split pin.
Regarding plastic fan, you need to find one that has flat area that you can attach to the Jowett boss with fan blades cut off.
Some cars run successfully without the mechanical fan but with an electric thermostatically controlled fan mounted behind the rad. I ran like this and cut
a slot in the
boss of the fan so I could slip it on without draining water.
The SA has a plastic fan with adjustable pitch so I can increase or decrease air flow.
Note that if your car cannot keep its temperature stable without a mechanical fan on a warm day (20deg C ambient) then removing the fan and replacing with an electric is false economy.
