In the "Jacks" thread within the Bradford forum of this website the Home link of the Jacks page takes you to a MG site and lower down on that page is information on a modern geared pre-engaged starter motor that is claimed to be a replacement for the old Lucas M35G inertia style starter. This is the type that the Javelin and Jupiter use also and so it seems possible that this modern starter might work for us too.

It looks as if someone supplies it in modified form since it seems to have an appropriate mounting flange to match that of the M35G. My guess is that this starter would be lighter, more efficient, quieter, would spin the engine over faster, and be kinder on the flywheel teeth, and thus worthy of consideration. The Jowett starter is largely out of sight, so this modern unit would not be too conspicuous.
Does anyone know where the MG community source this starter from? We would need to get a version that turns in the opposite direction. The MG boys should be able to tell us if it works without having to chamfer the opposite side of the flywheel teeth.

Geared Starter Motor Replacement?
Re: Geared Starter Motor Replacement?
Richard Gane put an article on something like this, it certainly looked similar, in the Jowetteer a few months ago.
The main advantage was weight, but it wasn't a cheap unit from memory.
Might be worth sending him a mail for more information, will try and dig out relevant Joweteer unless someone can remember or put their hand on it easily?
Jack.
