Farr bodied Jupiters

Post by richard turner »

Re: Farr bodied Jupiters.
Whist browsing through old Jowetteers yesterday I came across an advert for the sale of two Farr bodied Jupiters. Whilst it was great to see the well known MTJ 300 at the Jowett rally in Macclesfield, and another one is for sale currently, I wonder if anyone knows the whereabouts of the third one. In the advert there is reference to it being the spare rally prepared car. Rich

Rich - I could be wrong but I understood that the third car was scrapped / written off - Ed Nankivell should be able to confirm - the current car for sale is a complete wreck and is way overpriced

Hi Chris.
Thanks for that. The one for sale was owned by my father in the early sixties. There is a pic in my gallery. The other Farr bodied car was listed in a Jowetteer, for sale, in about 1983 in very good condition. Just curious to know if it has ever turned up. Rich

Please post some pictures of your acquisition and also let us know your plans for the restoration. You will no doubt need a supply of parts, so joining the club is a good idea. Help will then ensue from many on history, technical matters and engineering knowhow.

Hi. I will try and get the picture I have up in the next day or so. We haven't collected the car yet. It looks as if it has stood in the barn for a great number of years. The car is going straight to the restorers. Although I need to find someone to help with the engine. The idea is to have the car rebuilt and then to use in navigation rallies. I will certainly appreciate any guidance and help and see the benefit in joining the club. Thanks Mark

Jups have been used in Rallies for many years, so you should get some assistance in preparing cars for them on this forum and from club members. some old stuff on motorsport is here. http://jowett.org/jowettnet/dt/motorspo ... sports.htm but a loy more exists on JowettTalk and in the Jowett Gallery and in the club archive in Bradford.

Post your questions regarding the engine on here and we should be able to assist.

Thanks for the comments so far. At the moment, I am waiting to get the car delivered and will then work from there. The one I bought is the one that has been advertised for a while. I went to see it with my restorer and the car was in actually pretty good condition for a car that has been sitting for so long. I managed to get it for a decent price in the end which means the restoration has become viable.
Any assistance with regards to setting the car up for rallying will be much appreciated.
The engine and gearbox are certainly not something I am use to and these are the parts I have very little idea on. As the engine will have to be rebuilt (I believe), I think it makes sense to make improvements to the engine and gearbox. I only want to make alterations, which were available at the time and were perhaps utilised on the rally/race cars of the time.
Are there any engine builders recommended? I have someone I have used in the past based at Guildford, however, he has not done a Jowett engine before. Also, I appreciate the gearbox will probably need to be beefed up to handle more power. Therefore any guidance of someone who can help will be great.
Thanks Mark

Hi Mark,

If you are looking to get your engine and gearbox sorted out I'd have a chat with Richard Gane - he has a race Jupiter that had its engine and gearbox built by his engineer with some guidance and parts from the club, and if you want to get best performance out of your engine he may well be able to help and give you an indication of costs or put you in touch with his engineer.

Currently I am not aware of a queue of engine builders experienced and interested in working on Jowett engines commercially, which is an issue we are working on at the moment. A lot of members rebuild engines themselves with assistance from their local section, it is certainly worth getting some experienced input before spending a lot of money on a rebuild.

There is another well known Farr bodied Jupiter in the club, it is worth joining the club to get in contact with its owner and other members who I am sure will help you in any way they can.

Jack.

I will certainly be joining the club. I think the help in this project will be very helpful. Do you have any contact details for Richard? I would also love to get in touch with the other Farr car. I have notes with the car that say it was linked with the monte carlo car although not sure if it is true. Thanks Mark

There were 4 Farr Jupiters, one was written off before 1970, the other three survive. MTJ 300 is the Monte Carlo car which is in very good order owned by Sheila Rigg. Then there is OTB 559 owned by Simon Wood, complete and in OK condition. The third one FRJ 351 is the one owned by, or just sold by, Arna Day presumably to Marty. This one has been long-stored and will need a total restoration. For more information, see the book by Edmund Nankivell on the Special-bodied Jupiter, or contact me directly.

Just to confirm. I have bought the car. Thank you for the messages so far. I'm sure my questions will increase once the car starts getting stripped for restoration.
Thanks Mark
