Pitman's Book of the Jowett

Post by Tony Fearn »

I think this is the pre-war book, but what's interesting is that I've never seen one with its dust cover, so I'm posting it for posterity!

Great! and as you say interesting with the dust cover. Yes it seems to be pre-war as it refers to cars up to 1937. The registration number - although probably imaginary - may also provide a clue but I haven't got my Glass's Guide to hand.
The devil is in the detail!

Its the first edition ,published 1937, with what looks like an artists impression of the 1936 Peregrine on the dust cover. The 2nd edition was 1952 which in turn was reprinted 1953.
I have never seen a copy of the first edition with or without dust cover

Nice. I just had a look at the one I got in my lounge. Thats a 3rd edition printed in 1957. Think Dad had one of the 2nd swell. remember seeing a earlier chassie lube chart in it. But saying that I can remember that drawing of the Weasel too so maybe he had a 1st edition aswell?
If Not I would love to get it or a copy on PDF etc. handy to have more info just for working on prewar stuff.

The one in the Gallery is 4th edition 1959 but shows first edition 1937, second 1952.

There is one in the Bradford Archive Service, if you can get it out!

Re: Pitman's Book of the Jowett - Sold!

Post by Jack »

Given the number of very knowledgeable prewar owners who seem to think this is a pretty rare item, and the £20 price tag, seemed too useful and potentially valuable not to have a copy in the library at home, so I bought it. Nothing worse than valuable information being squirrelled away where we can't get information from it and share it with other owners!

I'll shout when it arrives, if anyone wants anything specific from it I'm sure I can help with making it available. This seems like one for the Gallery at the very least.

Whilst on this topic, are the 1930 dynamo brush connections shown wrong, or is it me? I would expect the field to be connected to one brush alone.

And, more pedantic, on the 1930-1 to 1935 diagrams, should the field brush be drawn close to the earthed brush? As per the 1936 4cyl diag? (The 2cyl is a 4 pole dynamo which is different). As drawn only 2v or so would be available for the field.

Probably the most helpful advice in this book is the adjustment for the early hubs, unexpectedly on p11. These akin tapered roller wheel bearings and should not be preloaded. Owners accustomed to other cars with ball races instinctively tighten and ruin.
some Bradfords may be the same.

As with so many old manuals the hub lubrication recommendations are absurdly excessive. Unless you go wading, pack just the races evry 20 years or 30,000 miles! modern cars go forever on the original fill.

Well, the eagle has landed, and it is an interesting little book. Even the guys at work are a bit interested, and quite a few of them can't even read.

Let me know if anyone wants anything specific from it, I'll try and get it scanned asap so we have the relevant data available to anyone that needs it.
