Hi there,

I need some sage advice on the correct style of front and rear bumpers for our 1952 STANDARD Javelin.

At present the car has a rear bumper that is lightweight, narrow and has the raised section along the centreline. The front bumper is the much heavier curved, but smooth section.

I had thought that the rear bumper was from an earlier car and the front one is the later ( ie. correct, or so I thought ) style. Now, I am not so sure. I have recently seen a photo of a late Javelin ( reg. KRU 40 ), that must be 1951 or later from the size of the headlights and the later front grill, and this has the smaller bumpers with the raised ridge, like my rear one, fitted to both the front and back. Was this a true standard model?

Is this what should be on my Standard model? Harry Brierley, writing in the Jowetteer years ago, listed the differences in the various Javelin models and wrote ' The de Luxe models, from 1950, used heavier bumpers'.

So, what should I have? Any advice would be welcomed.

Hello David. My understanding is that the lightweight bumpers with the 'raised section' along the centre is the correct version for the standard Javelin. The heavier more curved bumpers are for the deluxe. I could be wrong!

Nope. I looked in Pat's folder and to me it looks empty!

I could see other people's photos, but not Pat's. However, I was very grateful for his help.

It looks as if the view is that we should have the narrow bumpers.

I visited a non member a bit back, who is restoring a standard Javelin. The bumpers are off the car but he assured me that they are the ones that came with it. Like yours David he has the ribbed rear bumper and the heavier (what I think of as the Deluxe) bumper for the front. Do you think it possible that Jowett had a supply shortage, or is it that front bumpers are more prone to damage and have got replaced with the (probably more available from scrap mechants), deluxe ones??

Hi there,

I think I may have found out at least the 'official' Jowett view on bumpers for the 1952 models, by looking at the parts lists on the web!

The Standard model lists a front bumper blade as part no. 51230 and a rear blade as part no. 51001. By looking at the illustration in the 1950 Parts Book, these are both the lighter ribbed style.

The De Luxe model lists a front bumper blade as part no. 51405 and a rear blade as part no. 51573. By looking at the 1952 Parts Book, these are both the heavier style.

So, many thanks to everyone who helped. I think I should have the lighter style bumpers on our 1952 Standard model.

However, taking note of what Paul Beaumont says, that's not to say that Jowett's might have had a surplus of the front bumpers in the heavier style and that these got fitted instead!! I cannot see good Yorkshire folks ordering more lighter bumpers, if they had too many of the heavy ones in stock!

PS To now help John and Danuta Morgan, I wonder what style of bumpers their 1949 model should have had fitted, before 'Standard' and 'De Luxe' models were invented?

For what it is worth - which isn't a lot - I was always given to understand that the early Javelins had the ribbed bumper blades. I assume this was, as you say, before the introduction of the De Luxe model.

Hi Pat,

I don't think all 1949 Javelins had ribbed bumpers.

If you look at Noel Stokoe's book 'Images of Motoring', on page 74 Noel shows two Jowett publicity photos of 1949 Javelins and both these had the non-ribbed and heavier bumpers.

So, my feeling is that even before Jowett's brought out the Standard and De Luxe models, cars were leaving the factory with the heavier bumpers. Whether they all did could be shown by looking at a 1949 Parts Book, which I don't have. Can someone help here?

I feel pretty certain that our 1952 Standard should have the ribbed style bumpers.

My Parts Book, published January 1950, for 1950 Standard and De Luxe Javelins has separate part numbers for Standard bumpers and De luxe bumpers. The Standard bumper blade was part # 51001, Rear, and #51230 front. The parts list includes over-riders for the Standard and De Luxe bumpers.

I have put, into my space in the Jowett Gallery, a picture of Javelin GAK 925, apparently taken in London in late 1949, which is the car in the lower picture on page 74 of Noel Stokoe's book. The top picture on page 74 is of GAK 335, which is described as a late 1949 car. The chassis numbers are 5209 and 6125 respectively.
