Jowetts in Canada and RAC. Help needed.
From : Rupert Lloyd Thomas
Toronto.
Canada:
412 Jowetts came to Canada.
Two Javelins raced at Edenvale, Ontario, 3 September 1950, in the up to 1,500 c.c. race. Both black, #5 and #6. Drivers unknown.
A Javelin competed in the first 1000 Islands Rally in 1952. Both Javelin and Jupiter in the same event the following year.
Bill Sadler competed in a Jowett-based special circa 1955-1956.
(My pictures are hi-res suitable for print publication.)
Rallying:
I am trying to trace the competition career of Tom Sawell, who owned both a Javelin and a Jupiter.
His son has a finishers plaque for the 1951 RAC Rally – but so far I can find no other evidence of his taking part.
We know he entered, competed and finished in 1952 (two other finishers plaques, photographs).
The car was KLR 363, colour black, thought to be #78.
The photographs are on their way to me in the post. I can confirm the competition number then.
Sawell lived at Hayes Common, Kent, near West Wickham.
His cars were prepared and maintained for competition by Freddie Turk of Cooter & Green, Jowett specialists of West Wickham, Kent.
Legend has it that due to some rallying success he was offered a Jupiter by the factory on favourable terms.
Thought to be metallic blue or green.
I wonder if there is anything in the factory records or on the register that would help identify these two cars?
I have recently acquired Sporting Jowetts by Noel Stokoe. There is no mention of Sawell in this book.
Any assistance gratefully received.

Re: Jowetts in Canada and RAC. Help needed.
The 52 RAC Rally was of interest in thread involving DC Hodgson (and request for info from his son)
I got a lot of help on the Autosport Forums, link to discussion here: http://forums.autosport.com/topic/18996 ... d-results/ - worth posting on there with any info you have as their experts did seem to have quite a bit of information to share, which hopefully we can update here too for the records.
Link to original discussion here: http://jowett.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f ... it=hodgson
I have a copy of Autosport magazine with the 1952 Rally coverage, will check for mentions and photos, though this is I think in the Gallery now too.
The Jupiter Registrar may have some info from the factory records on his car, which hopefully might have a note on the terms offered or other detail to help tracking it down. The survival rate for Jupiters is very good, so there is a chance it will still be on the road if it can be identified.
Jack.

Hi Rupert,
Reply from Ed, the Jupiter Registrar:
"The Factory Records tell us that there was a Jupiter sold new to a certain Arthur Norman Sewell, of 172 Cranbrook Rd, Ilford. This Jupiter still exists... Registration YMP 935. Earliest record I have is dated 1965 when owned by a D S Riley."
From checking the records, that is the nearest result found to Sawell - note these are handwritten records and not entirely clear.
I hope this helps a bit in your search.
Jack.

Re: Jowetts in Canada and RAC. Help needed.
Eden Lindsay probably knows when all of the Javelins were shipped to Canada. He was able to tell me the date that mine was shipped to Vancouver. I would suggest that he could say which Javelins were shipped to the Ontario dealer before3 September 1950. Perhaps even which ones were Black.
Referring to Bill Sadler, I talked to Bill about his special a couple of years ago, and he told me that at the time when he built his first special he owned a Javelin as his daily driver, and thought highly of it.

I've had a look at the RAC Rally thread - I've also been posting at Autosport (I can't find the 1952 article here).

Mackenzie-Low won the Bodiam Hill Climb in an Elva in 1955.
I am afraid Sewell isn't Sawell.
Re RAC 1951:
J. Van der Mark and Maurice Gatsonides were crew in the same Jowett Javelin.
Registered “G 99” [possibly a Dutch registration] and competition number 238.

'Sewell' might be a mis-spelling in the records, unless there are other reasons to suspect they are different people.

Re: Jowetts in Canada and RAC. Help needed.
Hi Rupert,
I have just been given details of this new link by Jack Moon, so I would like to help as much as I can.
I came to the same conclusion as Ed N re AN Sewell and Jupiter number 858, but this is clearly not the car we are looking for.
As regards the Javelin KLR363, I am not having much luck with this either just at the moment. I can tell you that KLR is a London number from March 1949.
This makes KLR363 an early car but I only have three "KLR's" listed in my records:- KLR388, KLR585 and KLR639 so KLR363 is a new one for me!
KLR388 is chassis number D9/PA/2424 and was delivered to the Jowett agents HW Bentley & Partners on 21st March 1949, so KLR363 must have been supplied at about this time also.
I am very pleased you bought my Sporting Jowetts book, I am sorry I have not mentioned Tom in it, but I had no records about him, so I will greatly enjoy seeing how this tread develops!
Very best wishes, Noel

Re: Jowetts in Canada and RAC. Help needed.
Noel,
Your book was a delight. I didn't want it to end!
Do Cooter & Green, Jowett specialists of West Wickham, Kent, figure in your records anywhere?
I have a packet of memorabilia heading my way, thanks to Roger Sawell, ref the sporting career of his father Tom Sawell. This includes photographs. I will make these available in due course.
(Tom Sawell also entered trials and rallies in a black supercharged Dellow, registration LYT 822.)

Re: Jowetts in Canada and RAC. Help needed.
Hi Rupert,
Thank you so much for your kind comments about my Sporting Jowetts book, I really enjoyed finding the articles to put in it!
According to my records 433 Javelins went to Canada, the first being D8/PA/135 to Geoffrey W Brown in Vancouver on 17/6/1948, and the last one, E1/PCL/16245 to Nightingale Motors Ltd, Newfoundland on 17/5/1951. Do you know if sanctions on imports happened after this date, as no other cars went over after that?
I will look at your request for more info on Cooter & Green next.....another trip into the loft needed!
Very best wishes, Noel

Re: Jowetts in Canada and RAC. Help needed.
Hello again Rupert, I hope you found the post about Javelins in Canada of interest...
As regards Cooter & Green, I have their address as 485 Upper Elmer's End Road, Beckenham.
They took delivery of 53 Javelins, the first being D8/PA/124 on 8/6/1948 and the last was E2/PE/22847 on 26/9/1952
They also took delivery of one Jupiter E2/SA/700 on 21/4/1952 registered KDY350 and also a rolling chassis E2/SA/725 which was built up as the special-bodied Jupiter that is owned by Ed Nankivell and registered 32MMY, sadly I do not have any details of Bradfords or pre-war cars that they may have had....
I hope this helps.
Noel
