Wylie Javelin special supercharged GP car & parts for sale

Post by Andrew Henshall »

Several important and totally unique items selected from an extensive collection of Jowett historical pieces are to be offered for sale. As the seller’s representative, I am calling for genuine Expressions of Interest before 28th February 2015 in the purchase of the following items (either jointly or separately):

Wylie Javelin special supercharged grand prix car
The famous Wylie Javelin special is offered for sale for the first time in nearly twenty years. Designed & constructed by Arthur Wylie in 1949-50, this important piece of Australian motor racing history first appeared in public at the 1951 Melbourne International Motor Show in the Royal Exhibition Building to huge acclaim. It was raced extensively in Australia until 2002, including an appearance in the 1953 Australian Grand Prix at Albert Park (9th place outright). Amongst many excellent results, it set a new lap record at Warwick Farm (1969), held outright & class records at several hill climb circuits (Rob Roy, Silverdale), and has taken FTD at the famous Geelong Speed Trials.

Purchased by the current owners in 1997, and now restored to what is believed to be as close as possible to 1953 AGP specification. Its detailed competition history has been researched by myself. The car comes with a current CAMS Certificate of Description (Group Lb) and Log Book, plus spare wheels, alternative SU carburettor and Scintilla magneto to suit methanol, plus Wylie’s original car transporter (matching colour scheme).

Pair of Emeryson Twin-cam cylinder heads to suit Jowett flat four 1.5 litre engine
Paul Emery of Emeryson Cars Ltd designed and built F1, F2 and F3 cars in the UK, and these 1.5 litre Formula 2 Jowett engine cylinder heads were designed and built by him in the early 1960s. These are the only pair in existence, and were run at Emeryson Cars on several engines on the dynamometer and reputed to have produced 120 bhp before the project was abandoned. Passing through the hands of well-known Jowett names such as Alf Thomas, and Mike Smailes, the heads were purchased by an Australian Jowett collector in Brisbane. When the current owner purchased the heads in the late 1990s, they were missing the camshaft drive system. A toothed belt drive system has been manufactured and the heads are currently offered for sale fitted to a slave Javelin engine that was utilised to align the camshaft drive system (not running).

RHD Jowett Jupiter Chassis
This RHD Jowett Jupiter chassis is in good condition, complete with front and rear suspension (not restored), on genuine Jupiter wheels. Because the front cross-member outrigger where the chassis number is stamped is missing, the chassis number is not available, although it is believed to be E1SA267R (ex-Tim Hocking of Brisbane).

Freight for all (or any) of the items above can be arranged at buyer’s expense.

Re: Wylie Javelin special display in Hilton Melbourne

Post by Andrew Henshall »

The Wylie Javelin special is now on display in the foyer of the Hilton Melbourne South Wharf hotel for the month of the Australian F1 Grand Prix (March), as part of a two-car display amidst a stunning exhibition of original Formula One and motorsport artwork by two excellent Australian artists. I understand that the Hilton hotel is used by at least one of the Formula One teams during their stay in Melbourne: McLaren Mercedes.

The Wylie Javelin has been fully prepared for the display and looks fantastic in its very bright yellow paint (the original colour) amidst the dark-toned timber-lined foyer of the hotel.

I'm doing whatever I can to promote the Jowett marque at every opportunity, and when this unique opportunity arose I didn't hesitate to recommend it to the car's owner. While the Wylie Javelin doesn't look much like a Jowett Javelin, it does feature a Javelin engine and gearbox, so there is a connection!

The 2015 Australian F1 GP is held at the famous Albert Park Lake circuit just outside the CBD. The Wylie Javelin special has a strong connection with this circuit as it raced in the 1953 Australian GP at Albert Park Lake (held over 200 miles), coming home in ninth place overall.

The Emeryson twin-cam Javelin/Jupiter heads have been sold, along with the Jupiter chassis; they are all to remain in Australia with a member of the Jowett Car Club of Australia.

The Wylie Javelin special is still available, and is currently on display in the Geelong Museum of Motoring & Industry (Victoria, Australia) if you are interested in inspecting the car.

Following its six months on display at the Geelong Museum of Motoring, the Wylie Javelin special was returned to South Australia to be displayed during last weekend's Adelaide Motorsport Festival alongside F1 cars driven by Ayrton Senna, Gerhard Berger and Alan Jones. Victoria Park came alive to the sights and sounds of Grand Prix cars and support categories on a section of the original Australian F1 GP circuit in the East Parklands adjacent to the Adelaide CBD.

Anyone interested in the purchase of the Wylie Javelin special can still contact me via PM.

Best regards,

Andrew Henshall
