Jupiter hood assembly hinges and bows

In my slushy, balmy-weathered ski trip to tropical Canada (I should have stuck domestic and skied Boston's 8 feet of snow), I got to visit with Jup owner Mike Stout. In discussing his car, he remembers getting blueprints (diagrams?) of the wood pieces of the folding top from "the club".

Pretty sure that wasn't NAJR. So, does JOAC have or did have, design papers for owners to build a hood? Any one have a set?

Scott, Vancouver isn't British Columbia! If you had gone into the Interior you would have found many ski hills with 2 metres of snow.

Scott was really apprehensive when we encountered snow in the Rockies in the Javelin, so venturing up north to you was perhaps too much for him!

Anyhow, if our plans for the Alaska trip come to fruition then we will see a lot of B.C. and probably a lot of snow , although hopefully not on the roads.

I seem to now pay more attention to things Alaskan, watching programs on how the road was made in 1942, how the train line was built and run, the story of getting polio vaccine in the depths of winter to a town with an epidemic, the ice road truckers to Purdue etc etc....

The wood carving shop behind me bought a wood duplicator! Small world. Copying one part nets seven more, so a full run would produce seven sets of the ten pieces. A ball park figure is US$700 per set plus the wood cost, but that might be lower if the run time is less. When they have a little down time, we will try a sample to check run time and see if things will be acceptable. From what I have seen, the final parts would need to be smoothed by sanding.

So with these and a few sundries / catches plus the wood done surely there must be a market for the complete kit from one source ? even the hood fabric could now be added to the kit ?

All the wooden parts are on order from a new Dutch member Guert Kampert, these will be copies of wood parts from Jaak Jakobs car. Should be in stock with John Powter soon

While 115 is back in my shed I'm starting to sort out the hood.
Are the wooden parts still available?
Also is there a source for the center catch?

Also does anyone have a photo and dimensions for the woOd that is on the door strike pillars that the bottom hinge of the hood bolts too.

Hi Bryan, you are lucky my wooden bits are out of the car at the moment so I will photo. As you will see they are an extremely complex shape! I would say that a 3D printer would be the best way to reproduce them although I suspect they were actually made to fit! You need to contact Guert whose address I will PM you or you could email Tom.

I am watching these posts with amusement / sympathy ! During the recent (well 13 months long) re=fabrication of my Fabric Saloon I had to make many, MANY, adjustments to the fit of the doors which seemed to change with the weather.

At one point I had to add about 8mm to the edge of one door to get it down to a 4mm gap, then later I had to grind/sand away about 6mm so that the door would actually close.

A further complication was that the fabric is overlaid, in some places with as many as 8 layers. Although the fabric is quite thin, 8 layers certainly made a difference as to whether the doors would close or not.

The mention in one of these posts of Bradford woodwork reminds me that the late Roger Young had made a set of templates for this which I expect might still be available through JCS. Might it be an idea to do a similar exercise for these Jupiter bits? I bet that there will be requirements for more as time goes by.

In this case it might be an idea to produce drawings that could be electronically transferred or even possibly used directly on CNC equipment. This way it might be possible to make allowance for oversize in areas where the fit is critical for final fettling.

I think it is fair to say that Jupiters and probably Bradfords fall into the handmade category of cars. Whilst spare parts made to a pattern might be useful there will always be some fettling required to make them fit. In the case of these wooden hinge supports an engineering drawing would not enable them to be reproduced.







As you can see washers have had to be used to make some adjustment lately.
