JOWETTS FOR SALE - FEBRUARY 2015

Post by Chris Spencer »

Market comment - Little being sold but a few fresh cars have come to the market over the last month - Obviously the usual overpriced suspects are still lingering - Strange in how the overpriced cars always never appear to find new owners.

1953 Jowett Jupiter Prototype Alan Fishburn's Jupiter recreation, modified / lightened engine, 5 speed gearbox - finished in white with black trim - registration number: 2258 E - For auction through D T Mathewson in North Yorkshire on 14th March 2015 - Guide price is £20,000 NOW REDUCED TO £17,500
http://www.mathewsons.co.uk/#!auction-page-1/c5o (Page 2, second car from top)

1949 Jowett Bradford Van Part completed project - recently repainted bodywork in green, complete rolling chassis, axles, gearbox but no engine - seats require retrimming - vehicle is in Hereford - £1,900 ONO REDUCED - £1,500 SEE BELOW THREAD FROM KEN RODGERS WHO IS AWARE OF AN AVAILABLE ENGINE
http://www.carandclassic.co.uk/car/C579109

1952 Javelin project Green with red interior, running car said to start & stop well but not really ready for the road, the outer panels are suffering from rust perforations in all the usual places, rear bumper is missing and the front bumper in a poor condition hence the car presents quite scruffy in appearance, registration number is: BEU 164, the car is located in Holmfirth, West Yorkshire and is on a E Bay fixed price listing of £3,500 - Which considering the amount of work and money required to get this car anything like presentable / usable leaves the car well overpriced and going nowhere. NOW WITHDRAWN FROM E BAY BUT WILL PROBABLY BE RELISTED SHORTLY
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/like/25180713 ... rmvSB=true

1920 Jowett 8 HP light car Fresh to market through a Essex dealer - although the car appears to have changed hands a couple of times in the last few years - Finished in light grey over mid grey with black trim and light tan hood, Chassis number: B2080, Registration number: U3566, Restored in the early 2000's the car presents very well, at £28,000 is this the turning point for the pricing of vintage Jowetts ? Link below - the car is also listed on E Bay on a fixed price sale basis, and the classic / vintage sites of : pre war car / car & classic
http://www.carandclassic.co.uk/car/C577522

1949 Javelin - Early car, solid & roadworthy, new tyres, gold coachwork, presentable and solid car which would benefit from some cosmetic TLC, for sale by club member Danuta Morgan 01633 211410 - car is located in Newport, Wales - well priced at £3,500

1952 Farr bodied Jupiter The advert is sparse in detail but I have made some enquiries in order to add further detail - one of four cars coachbuilt to Jupiter chassis by Farr - I am led to believe that only 3 remain - this was apparently the reserve car for the 1953 Monte Carlo rally - having been barn stored for the last 40 years the car is described as being complete but in a fragile state - given the condition the asking price is very unrealistic at £9,500 now on the market for several months and going nowhere at this kind of money - web link to the advert below but no images - the car is in the West Midlands
http://www.carandclassic.co.uk/car/C560517

Javelin Projects 2 number Javelin projects - both in black one with a reconditioned engine the other has a seized engine - for sale by a collector who wishes to downsize - vendor would like to see the cars saved & restored rather than scrapped - However loss of storage means they have to be found new homes quite soon - vendor is open to reasonable offers - vehicles are located in Yorkley, Forest of Dean - Contact Bernard on 01594 562654

Early Jupiter SA - Older restoration - recent brakes - very smartly presented - car is in Cincinnati, USA - Guide price £27,000 - £30,000

1951 Jowett Javelin Deluxe Cream with tan interior, restored - vendor has taken the liberty of advertising it has 'Monte Carlo Winning Classic For Sale' However fails to state that if this the actual Monte Carlo car - which I somewhat doubt given the loose sales description that follows the headline, the car is in Brisbane, Australia with a hefty asking price of £11,000
http://www.carandclassic.co.uk/car/C541474

1951 Javelin project - Black - running but requires lots of work - LXT 259 - Price is a very unrealistic £2,800 and therefore no surprise that it's been on the market for over 12 months
http://www.carandclassic.co.uk/car/C515225

1929 Jowett 7hp - Restored chassis / running gear fitted with a new ash framed / alloy sports touring ducks back body - currently bare alloy finish / unpainted -
2 / 3 seater with dicky - registration EG 1893 - car is in Winsford, Cheshire £16,950 - near offer considered
http://www.carandclassic.co.uk/car/C514548

1950 Jupiter - Significantly historic car having been raced in the 1951 Monte Carlo Rally, very early chassis number 17, restored in the 1980's - engine rebuilt recently
British racing green with tan trim - Now in the hands of a French dealer - £35,000
http://www.carandclassic.co.uk/car/C540352

1952 Javelin - Straight car, nicely presented with gold coachwork, original interior in red with nice patina but now showing signs of wear
The car is for sale with a dealer in Lancashire for an eye watering overpriced & unrealistic £18,000 !!! Remains for sale but now reduced in price to £15,990 or near offer which still somewhat maintains the vehicle in the unrealistic & overpriced league
http://www.carandclassic.co.uk/car/C513130

1926 Jowett roadster - Rebodied in a mid 1930's sports style body finished in bright red and fitted with a Morris side valve engine - only part of the car that is original Jowett is the chassis / axles & wheels - the car is in Elsnez, Germany - Vehicle has been on the market in excess of 2 years at a very unrealistic asking price of £14,200 - also offered for sale with 2 other kit car / bag of mixed part cars has a collection on E bay for £44,000 !!!
http://www.carandclassic.co.uk/car/C470356

1952 Jowett Jupiter SA - Red with black trim - ex Phil Green - Very well presented - For sale via a dealer in Bucks £29,750
http://www.carandclassic.co.uk/car/C578676

Peter Rodgers Car Sales at Huddersfield holds the following stock:

1927 7HP Short Two - Maroon with black interior - priced at: £15,950

BEU 164 - I bought this car from it's elderly South Wales owner, who was going to scrap it, way back in the 90's. Found a new home for it in Hazelhead, Aberdeen with a chap whose name I can't recall. He started work on it but never completed it due to ill health. I believe he has since passed away.Photos attached.

There is a complete CB engine (along with many other parts) suitable for that Bradford down here in Cornwall about 30 miles from me which will be scrapped if no interest - I have supplied the vendor of the van with details in case anyone is put off purchasing without an engine.

Kip Motors in Dallas, TX has this Jupiter for sale $59,000
Although still on their website this car was sold at auction a few months ago for half of the above quoted asking price.

Scott posted this information in November 2014
1952 Jowett Jupiter at Kip Motors was sold at an auction in Anahiem, CA Nov 14 for US $26k. While it was nicely presented, it had water coming out the tailpipe and was pushed across the block. Purchased by a local collector in San Clemente.

Jupiter Mk2

Post by Keith Clements »

For those thinking about the Mk2 Jup have a look at 'The Complete Jowett History' page 110 for Phil Stephenson's artist's drawing, which was the start point then 'Jowett Javelin and Jupiter the Complete Story' pages 146 and 147 for two views of the plasticene model.

The Mk2 was never built by Jowett, because Roy Lunn came along, the CD Bradfords came along with their cart-sprung rear ends, and the R4 emerged as bodily a shortened version of the Mk2 on a version of the CD Bradford chassis.

Ed Nankivell found the SC frame for Allan, in George Mitchell's collection, entirely without body panelling of any sort.

All the drawings used by Allan are by Jowett. Jowett even made a plasticene model. The drawings and plasticene model were photographed (the model from several angles) by CH Wood. Ed was told by his Jowett Experimental Dept informant that in 1951 and 1952 several of the Experimental people had been to Motor Shows to look at Italian styling for ideas for the next version of the Jupiter, to still be based on he Eberhorst frame (as of course the R1s were), Grandfield saying that there was still life in the Eberhorst frame. That changed when Bastow and Roy Lunn took over.

Ed thinks Allan followed the body drawings faithfully, the drawings were meant to be working drawings and were very detailed. Allan thought of a few mechanical differences, one being a bit nibbled out of the front of offside front upright which enabled him to move the engine back by about 2 inches, making room for the radiator where it ought to be, right at the front of the car. Who knows, Jowett might have done that also if it had reached the prototype stage.

Looks like a translucent panel could they be small 'see through' panels to enable fuel level to be seen??

IIRC from a chat with the seller believe the asking price on this should be US $ 27,000-30,000, not in GBP. Of course, I'm sure the seller wouldn't object to a higher sale price. I will follow up and report.

A Bardford van has just been listed on eBay : eBay item number:221699918807. It is currently £999 - reserve not met. I was once sign written and I have had the vendor load pictures of the sign writing. Looks to be all there - but it is not easy to make out the condition. In Bexhill-on-sea. I have no connection with the vendor!
