Rear lights
Can anyone identify the rear lights on my 1949 D9/P.A. Javelin. Everything points to them being original but I have never seen another Javelin with these lights.

Re: Rear lights
Hi Nigel,
They could be original, but I don't think they are the same as any of the others I've seen.
We did some research on rear lights a couple of years ago, and only came up with variants involving the circular lucas type.
Others have fitted replacements, probably to make themselves more visible at night, this is the only time I've seen these though.
Jack.

Re: Rear lights
Nigel - I Don't think that these are Jowett, I have seen these on something else and will have to give it some thought / research - possibly a later model vehicle due to the inclusion of the reflector in the lense but certainly something with rear wing slope of approx 40 degrees

Re: Rear lights
Hi Nigel, They're certainly not Javelin. I did a Google image search using your actual image and it found nothing. I have checked all Lucas rear brake lights and it's not coming up there either.
It would appear to be a plastic lens (with the integral reflector), and so it is later than Javelin.
Is there a brand and number on the lens?
Its not MG, or Austin Healey, or Triumph TR2/3, or Morris, nor Hillman, or.............. thinking, thinking!
Regards,
Andrew

I have saved the picture in the Word doc and attached it as a png file as this saves a lot of disc space. Also means you do not need a lot of faffing around with Word.

It may be from a Ford . The script at the top of the lens looks like EnFo--in Ford characters--so they may have come from an autojumble or breakers yard. A neat fitting ,improved safety at night or in fog in a slowish car . Could accomodate flashers too. Which Javelin do you have? D9PA xxxxx what is x? Bob

Re: Rear lights
Interesting that the seller refers to melting --caused by a hot bulb too near the plastic -- there are signs of it in the picture above Bob

Re: Rear lights
Don't forget that a D9 Javelin when originally built would have had the then legal standard of one stop and tail light on the boot lid and nothing else. Additional lamps on the wings would have had to be fitted when the requirement for two became mandatory in the early fifties - though, sensibly, many manufacturers were already fitting two before the actual legal date. It was one of those rare retro acting laws; all vehicles had to comply, hence a roaring trade in accessory lights. This law predated the rules on flashing indicators and some manufacturers took advantage of this and had the one brake light as before in the middle and used the brake filament as a flasher in the two rear lights. Naturally this flashed red. Even so, this arrangement if originally fitted is still legal. I have a non- Jowett with this system and feel slightly less worried about what colour they are than the brightness of the old lights in general! There is a lot of scope for replacement LED lights in period casings and it rather nice to think that that Nigel's D9 Javelin, rather than being updated and having later Javelin lights fitted, could continue to have some kind of appropriate age related rear lamps fitted.

Re: Rear lights
Tony - Strangely enough I researched the Ford Popular 103E rear lights yesterday but all the images I could find had a similar rear lamp but was larger - you are certainly on the right track with these though
Nigel - Can I suggest you contact the Ford Sidevalve Owners Club who should be able to confirm the origins / Ford model that the lamps were fitted to (they should also be able to confirm if the lamps / lenses are still available) - link to the club below

Re: Rear lights
Thanks for all the replies,I will try and answer some of your questions. The chassis no is D9PA 2335 on closer inspection the lamps have got the Ford stamp on them,I would now think the lights were fitted as suggested when the new lighting laws came in .the rear wings have never had any other holes drilled which makes me believe these are the only lights ever to have been fitted to these wings, also this car has never had windscreen washers fitted either.
The distortion in the lens was due to the previous owner wiring the stop lamp circuit to a permanent 12v feed and me not realising and left it with the handbrake on And thus stop lamps on for 10 mins before I Realised.
