Re: Jupiter close ratio gearbox on ebay
This guy had a load of parts for sale about a year ago - most went for ridiculous prices.
Anyone on here understand gearbox numbers?? How can you identify a close ratio box?

Re: Jupiter close ratio gearbox on ebay
We definitely need to know how to identify a close ratio gearbox now! Must have given away 10 gearboxes in the last 3 years, one of which could have been one of these!!!Andy Stevens wrote:Sold for £343 !
I don't understand why £343 for this box. There are only one or two people racing Jupiters in the country, and not many more worldwide, surely that is the only reason for paying this kind of price for this type of box? For road use the major issue is the absence of a 5th or higher 4th gear for motorway use, this seems to be the opposite.
Jack.

Re: Jupiter close ratio gearbox on ebay
That is cheap.
But it really depends on condition. This was apparently unused, so worth every penny, even if it was not close ratio. Cost of a recon gearbox... upwards £900. The wide ratio might be useful with a higher back axle ratio and without overdrive as the lower first gear (3.88 to 1 against 3.56 to 1) helps on steep hills. With overdrive, the wide ratio is much better.
See Tech notes part 24, bulletins 129 and 143 and the competition tuning notes in Tech Notes Part 13 that show expected ratios. A close ratio box helps in competition as a 'cammy' engine with a narrower power band can deliver that power without drop off during gear change with a close ratio. But it does mean that in rallying you might burn out the clutch on steep hills.
You need to count the teeth on the Stem Gear 52722 (19 teeth, previously 18) and Layshaft cluster 52734 (33 teeth, previously 34 ). Gearboxes numbered J1 upwards on the gearbox top incorporate wider ratios, also above serial number 8153. Note the Meadows box (without the J prefix usually 5 digits starting 9 e.g. 9nnnn) is wide ratio. Please note that many, many recons would have taken place so do not rely on any numbers on the outside.
The Meadows and early Jowett gearbox have wide ratios. The close ratio box was introduced from E0PC11270 and the wide ratio box reintroduced from E3PE24179.
