Re: Bradford Air filter
I don't know for sure but I suspect that these were a commercial item (like - say - Lucas lights) that were bought-in and fitted by Jowetts, possibly with purpose-made brackets.
If so, they were probably fitted to other vehicles at, or before, the time so the search may benefit from being widened.
Someone will probably know for sure . . .

Re: Bradford Air filter
they were , I think, made by vokes and are same/similar to those fitted to some military 16H Nortons for desert duties. I havn't come across them on any other car or van.
If absolute originality is not required it should be possible to fit a modern filter soatmewhere ? on bulkhead by making a 'top h at' flange and aralditing/bolting/riveting it to one side of the air intake deflector ( and blanking off the other side). Do not be tempted to do without the alloy deflector as it is there to prevent 6ft flames shooting out if the the thing backfires!

Re: Bradford Air filter
They are pretty rare, as they were only fitted as standard fitment to export models and the Utility Deluxe, I believe. Over the years and in 2 separate collections of junk... er spares I have acquired an inner bracket and the outer can, but have no idea what actually went inside to do the business. Like George I have never come across such a thing anywhere else. I wonder if it was a Jowett fabrication to fit around a commercially available filter. I have considered fitting 2 pancake filters one on each side of the "nose".
If there is a real demand for these I could see about getting some replicas made to accommodate an available cylindrical paper filter, but would need to do some research in,say, Halfords, first!

Re: Bradford Air filter
Can someone link to a pic of how this should look?
On mine I have a carb sticking up, and a 90 deg elbow which clamps onto the top of the carb. On that there are wire mesh on either side of the elbow, but I also have a large (about 9" long and 6" diameter) cylinder which could clamp onto the elbow.
George, when you talk about the deflector do you mean the 90 deg elbow?
On pg26 of the CC instruction book it has a pic of the black filter that I have - and says "Note - Air Cleaner fitted to Export models only" which I assume is the big cylinder?

Re: Bradford Air filter
Not my neck of the woods, but I have a feeling that the WWII Jowett stationary engine that I once owned had a 'cylinder type' air filter.
I wonder if Vokes have any records relating to this type of filter? They don't seem to have anything remotely comparable in today's product range, but surely SOMEONE (manufacturer) does?
Might they be fitted to things like compressors or vacuum pumps?

Re: Bradford Air filter
1. the ''90 % elbow'' is indeed the deflector and should be retained
2. the 'can' of the vokes filter contained a washable in petrol felt filter element. there may be a modern paper element that would fit perhaps with a bit of packing at the blunt end

Re: Bradford Air filter
Hi there
I've got at least one original.
The one fitted to my Bradford is chromed, originally it was black.
Inside there is a felt-like filter that can be washed and dried to us again and again...

Re: Bradford Air filter
Lovely to look at but any sign of a maker's mark / label?
I sent an eMail to Vokes but no reply so far.

Re: Bradford Air filter
Hi again
Managed to find my old air filter reserve
Hope these two pics will help air filter seekers to figure out the filter system, at least in the export models 1951
