1951 Jowett Javelin Deluxe Cream with tan interior, restored - vendor has taken the liberty of advertising it has 'Monte Carlo Winning Classic For Sale' However fails to state that if this the actual Monte Carlo car - which I somewhat doubt given the loose sales description that follows the headline, the car is in Brisbane, Australia with an asking price of £11,000

1928 Jowett 7/17 Sports Racer Originally left the factory as a tourer but was restored & rebodied with a sports body in the 70's, Matching chassis / engine number: 823147 - regisration number: RA 5762, Looks to be in fine order and formed part of a collection in the USA, Said to be the only 2 cylinder / pre war Jowett in the States, For auction on the 9/10/14 - 10/10/14 - through RM Auctions at Hershey, Pennsylvania, USA. Although it is listed without reserve (so it will sell regardless) it carries the guide price of $50,000 - $70,000 which in GBP pitches the car at £30,000 - £43,000 on current exchange rates - If sold within the guide price then we are heading a record price on pre war Jowett tourers / sports bodied cars - link below

Chris and I went to the Salon Prive auction of the ex-Surtees Coachcraft Jup. We met John Arnold and Richard Gane there. The car was sold to a telephone bidder for hammer price £33500 which, with commission, works out at £38525. The sellers cost of £2010 means that the seller gets £31490 and the buyer pays £38525. £7035 to the auction house!

You can understand why the auctioneer is anxious to sell at the highest price, and to close deals even if the car does make reserve. Some cars went for £2m with the same percentage commissions.

I am intrigued to know how you get the engine out of the car, but I was not going to pay £40k to find out.

The car has recently been fitted with an enlarged bore 'incongruous exhaust system like my Subaru GTB . Japanese influence perhaps? The only other 'new' part seemed to be the twin petrol pumps which surprisingly fed into a Javelin pipe system between the two carbs.

Hope to see the car soon on the track where it belongs.

What Keith does not mention is that to give the car any justice it requires a full restoration - and if the new owner undertakes the said restoration this will be a very, very expensive car upon completion.

I was being a bit harsh on the auctioneers as the seller's and buyer's commissions did include 20% VAT. What was also a killer on an imported Fangio van was that VAT on the hammer price and import duty was also payable. So you really have to think again if you think you have a bargain. That van was also described as 'immaculate' and clearly was not. Perhaps auctioneers use a different dictionary.

Yes it is a members vehicle - R A Limb and is advertised in the Jowetteer - If it has been fully restored properly the vehicle would be priced at £7k - £9k on a dealers forecourt - full restoration cost on a Bradford even if you undertaking the work yourself is going to be in the £4k / £5k region so if you could negotiate £6,000 / £6,500 for the vehicle then its a good purchase - I note that someone has already made an offer - if you are seriously interested give the vendor a call and explain that you are a club member willing to give the vehicle a good home and haggle from there

Bradford prices seem to be increasing with demand, price looks pretty good assuming there isn't any hidden rot, tyres are in good shape and it runs well.

Quite a few cars needing a couple of grand of work have moved at over 5 grand, so if you want something ready to go this one looks like good value.

Further updated 21/09/14 @ 12:38 - Jowetts appear to be coming to the market on a very regular basis of recent weeks with the odd one selling now and again - I don't think I can remember so much choice within the market than what is available at present.
