FLASHING INDICATORS USING SIDE AND BRAKE LIGHTS

I have recently fitted Flashing Indicators to my JUPITER using the front clear sidelights and the Red rear brake lights. This means there are ugly orange stuck lamps front and rear a thing that I would not inflict on my beautiful Jupiter.
Unfortunately my Javelin has got those orange lights front and reart which were fitted prior to my owning the car 30 years ago.

The system I have used i9s not new and was used on the Morris Minor for the export market before floshers became standard. The Flasher unit is still available and is called the LUCAS DB10 It i9s available from Holdens Vintage Electrical At £88 + vat or from the Morris Minor suppliers G.S.Jones of Shrewsbury at a cost of £49+ vat. Look at their website http://www.morris-minor.org. Part No SWT107

The Lucas DB10 is a Relay box which has 8 terminals and is fairly straightforward to instal. I will try to add a wiring diagram but may have to get Keith to do it for me.

I have used LED Dual filament bulbs in the front side lamps which have a White led for running lights and Amber for indicators which shine through the clear glass as Orange. The light intensity is excellent and power consumption almost zero. It is necessary to fit a twin filament bulb holder to front side light. Very easy to do this.

At the rear I have fitted dual filament LED Side and Brake light bulbs which also are much brighter and visible. The Lucas DB10 allows the Indicators to flash whilst braking. The brake light on the other side is steady light whilst indicator flashes. When fitting LED bulbs with flasher unit, it is necessary to use an electronic flasher unit and not the standard flasher fitted to cars. These are available from the same supplier as the LED bulbs and cost about £8.

Installation involves connection to the brake lights. This wire can be found at the brake light switch and saves wiring to rear of car. Extra wires have to be run to left and right sidelights. I fitted a steering column stalk switch with green light, however you can use any suitable Turn light switch.

Still have my JUpiter and Javelin both Mot'd
and running well. No longer using Jupiter for competetive motoring. She needs the rest.

Hi Trevor

I have done exactly the same thing on my Long Two, as I wasn't happy driving in modern traffic without indicators, but didn't want to fit extra lights. However, I have just fitted orange bulbs into the side lamps and was going to go without side lamps. Could you tell me where you got the two colour LED lamps from, as these look a perfect solution!

Thanks, Barry
