Javelin on ebay

Post by paul wilks »

Latest Javelin on ebay. Seems a 'basket case' BUT the rear lights look interesting.
I remember seeing at Howden Clough in the early 1960s one of the last Javelins produced. It was fitted with the same wider rear light mounting with rear light and indicator alongside each other.
I have seen a photo of such a car JAK863. It used to feature in our Car Club 'blurb' many years ago.
I wonder what happened to her? She was green (appearing metallic green)

When I saw this car on e bay I also thought that the lights looked like those on JAK 863. I will look out a pic.

I sold JAK 863 in 1998 to Keith Tucker......so given the saga of him and other peoples cars and engines a few years later, I presume it has been scrapped....although the details are still on the DVLA database.

What a great pity for an historic Javelin.
Was she a really late chassis number? Do we have details? Just interested in all things historic about Jowetts!!

Thanks

JAK 863 was Bradford registered in late 1953. It looks as if it is the same car just sold on ebay , ca 20 years on from Andy's pictures . There may be a question as to whether these are of the same car, there are no details on the ebay site as to number etc . Also the positioning of the rear lights may be further out from the wing/ body joint on the the ebay car but it could just be the angle of the picture .

JAK was a series often used by Jowett, for example JAK 75 was the 1952 Motor show Javelin.

Presumably the successfull bidder has some interest in Jowetts so we may hear more , I think ebay do not disclose buyers details ?

Hi Bob

I agree, the rear lights don't look like they are in the same position as the pics of JAK863. Also the additional indicator lights in the picture of JAK863 are missing from the 'ebay Javelin, although of course she could have had replacement front wings at some stage!

Hi Paul, Certainly needs some wings now! The mounting for the rear lights in Andy's pictures is not as clear as on the ebay car They look more as if the lights are individually mounted without the double pressed mounting , maybe it is just the rust !. Also the ebay car has the reversing lamp on the bootlid , was that a feature of late cars, I thought it was taken out when the delux number plate was introduce in 1952 ish? .All very confusing , best wishes Bob

Guys
E bay car is not JAK 863.
JAK 863 was a standard - E2 PE 24015
Very little interest in it when I sold it. It was quite rough, particularly under the rear seat - but restorable.
Had a host of added extras - see dashboard pic -double electric fuel pumps, plastic side windows, electric fan, heated rear window etc etc

Andy , E2PE 24015 was registered around May 1953. It seems to be equipped for night rallying , the list of extras, swivelling spotlight in the glove box , flexi light attached to the dashboard etc . What is the lever above the gear lever ? Also the rear bumper bracket looks unusual?

The ebay car may have been earlier ? Regards Bob

My guess would be a spot/foglight 'dip' switch or possibly overdrive.

We are all rushing to get a guess in before Andy actually tells us! My opinion is that on the end we are looking at the inside of a rubber sucker and it it is an electric demister accessory that has part fallen from the windscreen. They always did and might just as well have done - the were no good as a demister. Perhaps this also explains the industrial strength ammeter.

Unfortunately I cannot lay my hands on my notes for JAK 863, but it was a works car - see Complete Jowett History page 157.

The mystery sucker is from one of two screen demisters.

Bob is correct with the flex map light and spotlight.

No overdrive.

The rear bumper is a robust piece of steel, presumably added at some later date.

if you google Jowett Javelin, and look at the images page, there is a pic of the car, about 5 rows down, presumably when fairly new, looking resplendent in metallic green paintwork.

Anyone in touch with Keith Tucker.... :?

Seems to be cleared up now . Many Jowetts registered xAK were works cars or possibly new owners who could collect cars from the factory. I would think the double rear lights were a post 1955 addition unless there is any evidence it was a Jowett modification.Pictures of a works modification with lights similar to Jaguar mark two and Morris minor are in some of the books so that seems to be the way Jowett were moving . Interesting detective work ! regards Bob
