Hobart Rally 5th-6th April 2014
Plans are coming together to attend the Tasmanian Rally. A few Brits are attending with Bill, Diana and I departing Melbourne in Richard Homersham's Javelin to brave the Bass Straight and get there early to try to find a few devils. I am combining this with my first foray to NZ and the JCCNZ Rally in Palmerston. See the plans here.

Now at Mike & Sue Allfrey's in Melbourne under the bonnet of the Jup.

Mike and SA

Puffing Billy. A great steam train ride up into the hills.

The crank out of the Jowett engine that briefly held the Australian water speed record. Propeller soft directly connected to front of shaft. Boat was towed to start engine.

Light and thin bearing con rods possibly 1950 Ford. Shaped pistons.
Sump was extended downwards with cooling coil inside it. Block was cooled by half inch pipe inlet of lake water.

Car show
Richard Homersham took Bill in the Javelin which will be our transport for the next week whilst I travelled with Mike in the SA to the race course hosting the car show.

A fine pair of Bristols next to the Jag.

The Jowett contingent.John Westcott. Richard Homersham. Andrew Henshall. Bill Lock.

Lots of British cars including these Healeys.

We went back via Richard's house in Upwey where we fettled the Javelin and looked at the two Jup projects.

Sanctuary
In the morning we went around the sanctuary where many of the endangered species are being saved. Tasmania devils.

Possums .Platypus but Diana's favourite the Koala.

We had a sumptuous lunch at the Royal Automobile Club.
Then some more greasing of the Javelin.

Re: Hobart Rally 5th-6th April 2014
The Javelin is still going well having survived a day of rain out of Devonport, some twisting lanes into St Helens and some very steep hills in Freycinet NP. Now on our way to Port Arthur after a night in Swansea.

Re: Hobart Rally 5th-6th April 2014
Now in Melbourne awaiting flight to Christchurch. It is raining !

Yesterday we had an observation run which required us to estimate the height of a shot tower. In our car Randall, Roy and I used three scientific methods whilst others cheated and asked. The first method used a protractor, spirit level and slide rule whilst pacing the baseline.

The second measured the size of the bricks and the number of courses. The third measured the tread height and counted the steps. The first yielded 152ft and the other two 161ft. This gave an average within 3 inches of the official height. We did not get any credit for such a diligent approach!

I was also shown around Rex Maddock's hoard of Jowetts and spares. About a dozen complete Javelins rescued in the 70s await restoration. Let me know if you want one. They are fairly solid with little rust but do need complete restoration.
