Bradford diesel powered van

Post by OzzyMike »

Dear all,
I am trying to find information on Bradford vans repowered by diesel engines.

I have a poor quality photo of a Jowett Eight chassis, taken in Australia, fitted with a "Victor" diesel engine.

Google search tells me about the "Victor" brand as being a British manufacturer who built a small Flat Twin industrial engine
called the "Cub"
The article mentions that this engine was mainly used in industrial applications and that some were fitted to Bradford vans
as well .
Any information on this interesting conversion would be welcome.

Coventry victor fitted their diesel engine and their gearbox to a few Jowett 7hp commercial chassis around 1935 36. . I am certain that a diesel was not factory fitted to CA/B/C Bradfords but have a feeling that a Coventry Victor diesel was relatively recently fitted by a JCC member to a Bradford. I think Jowetts were experimenting with the idea of offering the Perkins P3 as an option on the CD but have no idea how far this got.

The late Ron Inns from Canvey Island fitted a Coventry Victor Cub Flat Twin diesel to a Bradford about 25 years ago. It involved cutting away most of the inner wing panels. I do not think it was very successful and the vehicle was eventually reverted back to a Jowett engine.
I have pictures somewhere but please do not ask me to look for them!

25 years ago sound about right for 'relatively recently'!
