Bradford Utility restoration LKK77
LKK77 December 1948 BRADFORD UTILITY Which belonged to David Fox( past Jowett news letter editor). The car has been stood outside in a garden since 2006 .all the four door pillars need replacing.but it has had a fortune spent on it. with in 15 mins of getting home after a 360 mile trip i had it running with good oil pressure and sounding very stong considering the fuel is 7 years old, It just shows old Jowetts will run on anything!.Ive started to get ready to do the door pillars and frame work that is needed,as for the metal work its very sound,The scuttle has never been welded and still wont need any.if anyone has any pics or info of this car can you please contact me on 07770 354809

Re: Bradford Utility restoration LKK77
Only got the Bradford Utility on Monday,Its now Saturday and I've got all four doors off and got it running properly. When I put water in the radiator I found that both heads were badly cracked; As luck would have it I had two good cylinder heads on the shelf,When pulling the heads off I could have a good look at the cylinder bores and pistons,It was nice to find everything in very good condition (Standard bores and pistons) Now its back together and is running like a dream.the car was last on the road in 2007 and still had the old petrol in,so it was possible to go for a quick drive around the yard and up the street,Everything worked as it should,I was very impressed engine, gearbox and brakes are all very good. So back I the garage.
I stripping out the interior I found that behind the interior panels that someone had filled between the woods with foam,This had been used as sound deadening,This has caused the car to hold the damp around the rear door pillars hence needing rear door pillars,As for the front door pillars,The bottom hinge is supported by a inner strengthener, that's welded in to the bottom of the scuttle. But the top hinge has nothing to support it and just rely's on the wood being good, But in my cause its well roughen wood due to the screen badly leaking. After the door pillars are replaced I will make a extra support for the top hinge to the weight of that heavy door.

Re: Bradford Utility restoration LKK77
I used to strengthen the door pillars by putting a threaded rod from the hinge through the scuttle . Very easy to do, and made a vast difference.
Good memories of Bradfords.

Re: Bradford Utility restoration LKK77
yes strengthening the door pillars is a definate must do as all bradfords suffer from this! with the weight of the doors something has to give!

Re: Bradford Utility restoration LKK77
naked, the funny thing is with all the inner panels removed you would think that all the wood was in reasonable condition and only the door pillars need replacing, now with the outer panels off,it's the outer panels holding it all together, can't stop now!

Re: Bradford Utility restoration LKK77
The inner arches are home made and not very good so I will make a brand new set as I make them for Jowett spares. Other than that all the metal work is very good! Makes a change to see a good one
I did the metal work on KWT935 for Hendrick Moulds so I've seen enough jowetts to know where they rought! Lol

its hard to believe that this is the car in 2007, it shows you what happens when you put foam behind the panels then don't put it in a garage! The foam holds the water/damp.hence the ash frame rotting out!

Re: Bradford Utility restoration LKK77
Any car stored outside will very quickly deteriorate in a few months unless it has very good rustproofing and wood preservative. All Jowetts had virtually no paint on the inside of panels and only some bitumen placed on some parts of the panels. Thus any dampness will quickly rust and then rust will creap under the bitumen. Add to that no protection inside any box sections and the dampness will condense on the inside and rust will eat its way through. Even inside a garage which is not dehumidified or heated, a cold night will condense water on the inside of sections causing rust to form and mildew to start destroying wood and fabric. I used to put a thermostaitic fan heater in my cars over winter before having a dehumidified garage.

Hi David,
Photos look great - keep them coming! Am I ok to include these photos as part of our display at the NEC Restoration Show in April (are you coming?) of restoration projects currently in progress across the club? We have a Bradford Barn Find on the stand and the photos of the ash frame and what is possible thanks to the hard work of you and JCS should attract a few people to the idea of owning a Bradford.
I can't be the only one thinking about a Bradford Woodie - has anyone done that? With the wood frame varnished and plywood inside the frame it could be truly stunning, but I suspect would require a bit of a rethink compared to a standard frame.
Jack.
