The wing & the rear lamp housing have been the subject of a shunt at some stage - the lamp housing is distorted and has also been attached to the wing with self tapping screws at some stage, the additional lamp hole to the underside of the original lamp will not be required and will be blanked off with new metal
WP_20131023_006-001.jpg
Lamp housing removed and the area cleaned up / brought back into shape, the additional hole was roughed out and welded up along with the holes made by the self tapers - we have obtained some better lamp housings so I just need to locate these and trial fit them to the wing
WP_20131023_007-001.jpg
Holes drilled and new Javelin script badge trial fitted - all that remains now is the wing to come back off to complete the fettling / dressing of the panel prior to refitting for final panel alignment

I was pressed into service only an hour after landing from LA as Peter and Chris were busy sorting parts for refurb and completing panel fit.
No jet lag so we had a full day. Also on Monday as the gales subsided we continued.

Here is Peter fitting the bonnet hinge. This had to be done twice as the original hinges were bent. Also the bonnet did not fit well so another was dug out of the store.
Meanwhile I was sorting and finding parts. I also dismantled a locking handle so that Peter can see if he can get some made. If you think you may want one then let us know. Cost is yet to determined.

I am not sure if the short Mills pin is correct and is short or if the lock actuator is severely worn. I need to dismantle another unit.

Way ahead of you :) http://www.jowett.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=2763

Worth emphasising with Peter that the problem bit is the cage, not the handle itself, which is more easy to find, modify other parts, and to repair and rechrome. That is the part which is broken by over-enthusiastic owners (and possibly others trying the handle to see if it is open) attempting the open the door when it is locked, which results in the cage breaking at the all-too-familiar point between the lock barrel hole and the handle opening, or between the handle opening and the corner of the cage near the barrel.

Thanks but still not sure if both Mills pins should be the same. Now realise the lock actuator had broken off the barrel.

I am fairly sure mills pins are different. This pic shows the teardown of locking handle, which proved internally to be almost identical to the other handles, and the difference in length is visible.

I think best option will be to buy new internals from Austin Healey spares supplier, as the mills pins were in many cases very rusted and resulted in the ends being splayed slightly when tapped through, worth avoiding if they ever needed to be stripped down again, and new springs particularly would make sense as just removing them tended to result in quite a bit of poking and bending, so probably a good idea for the few pounds involved.

Update on the chrome, I am off to Premier Plating shortly with a whole box of bits, including completely stripped down front grille, bumpers, and all kinds of other bits. Hopefully this will be ready in the next few days, if they are quiet we may even have these back before Peter goes home.

Further update on the chrome, we have a supplier problem. The supplier is not there any more.

Looks like the search for another good chromer is back on. Surprising, because they were very busy as a result of all the other local chromers closing down...

The guys in the yard seemed to think it was health and safety problems which had closed them down.

Hi Jack,

Several of us use Doug Taylor at Banwell, south of Bristol. He is on 01934-820454. Have a look at his website? I can see that bigger items, like bumpers etc., might be a problem with carriage, but smaller parts could be posted?

We have found a massive difference in his prices compared with others, often a factor of 50% lower, but don't tell him!

Hi David,

Thanks for the referral - That could work out just nicely, one of our number is doing quite a bit of work in the South West at the moment so hopefully we can slot in a visit to Banwell on his travels.

I'd much rather use a company that is known and trusted, and reasonably priced, than resort to Google or the Yellow Pages and cross my fingers.

Roof lining hoops

Post by Keith Clements »

Just to record that the six hoops are colour coded on their ends as follows from the front.
brown, yellow,green, red, blue, black,

Peter is just sand blasting and spraying so did not want to get them mixed up. I supplied him with wire of appropriate colour.

Just bought a pair of 461 re-pops from this guy in eBay UK: 24671spurs or search completed auctions for Lucas 461.
They were UK 95 plus shipping. The lenses are curved, but that's a small detail since originals are next to impossible to locate.
The set should be here in the next week, so I could give you a report on quality when they arrive.

Peter had obtained some one piece rear lamp cowl rubbers so the cowl was trail fitted - it just needs shot blasting & priming which is a job for Peter as he is over for a week

Peters other mission is tackle this lot
WP_20131027_014-001.jpg
WP_20131027_015-001.jpg
Which all requires sorting / cleaning / shot blasting / priming - some parts require replacing & others just require a good fettle and the images are only showing the half of it !!
