Day 16. Oklahoma and Texas.

Post by Keith Clements »

Good night of sleep and away at 8. We went all day without taking an Interstate so saw lots of country and small towns covering 372 miles. We followed the 9 all the way through Norman picking up the 152 to Sayre on the I40 but just crossed over to continue on the 152 ending up at Pampa.

We chose small non chain restaurants to eat and at last this evening managed to get some wine with my meal, although the only available was a rose which was not quite what was desired with the KC strip steak which was tasty here in Pampa north Texas.
The car was again misfiring and so we changed the ignition lead and spark plugs stopping many times to investigate.

Scott had forgotten to pack the timing light so tried to get one in three shops. On leaving the last a local offered his so we followed him to his house and duly adjusted the way out timing. Hopefully the problem is fixed so we can make it over the Rockies.

Hi Keith and all,
Have really enjoyed following your trip and just so jealous, would love to be there. Cant believe a Jowett misfires in the wet!! It's the one fault I have never suffered from.
The Javelin really looks good and you have been covering quite a high daily mileage so you have to be fair to her to give a little trouble. I wonder why the rocker shaft gave up the ghost.
Have been using the Jupiter quite a bit recently and had a great ride today down to Mersea for an afternoons sailing in excellent weather. The engine with the new distributor is right back on peak performance like she was when we used to do the rallies. Proper timing has allowed the temperature to remain at 75 and have no pinking anymore. Enjoy driving it much more than the E Type.

Hope the rest of your holiday goes really smooth and will continue to watch out for your reports and photos. Look after that Javelin and tell Jim that "It's a real Zoe"

Take care
TREVOR SPERO
Still have my JUpiter and Javelin both Mot'd
and running well. No longer using Jupiter for competetive motoring. She needs the rest.

If you're still having problems keeping the dizzy dry, I recommend finding a small plastic box like the ones that mushrooms come in in supermarkets here. Have a look round the grocery aisle, there is bound to be something similar.

I used to use this trick on my Mini (you must remember... ;)) as the eizzy was right at the front and forever getting soggy. Mushroom box was just the trick - I always had one in my tool kit (along with vaseline and WD40!).

Don't forget that you're actually meant to be coming home at some stage, too... ;)

Day 17 Snow in New Mexico

Post by Forumadmin »

Bad internet at the moment as we are holed up in Chama at 8000 ft.
Seemed to have fixed carb problem after finding float was holed. Then pressure too high.Made it over 10800ft pass. Fantastic scenery took 250 pictures!
The route took us on the 152 to Dalhart and the 87 into New Mexico at Texline. Then the 56 to Springer and the 58 to Taos taking the 64 into Chama.

Day 18 Arizona

Post by Keith Clements »

The day started with ice on the car but sensibly we had drained some of the water out of the rad and filled with antifreeze the night before.
Image
Then taken the car for a short drive to circulate through heater and saw these steam engines being put away for the night.
Image

Image
Image

Some dear looked on whilst we fettled the car.
Image
Image

It was a little chilly inside the car early on.

Image
And we needed to keep warm when changing the wheel bearing that gave up after 30 miles obviously strained on the many hairpins that Scott powered round the day before.

Image
Still uploading files from today so you will have to wait for the stunning scenery of Arizona and some of Utah and Colarado stopping a while at Four Corners.

Finished early today with only 260 miles on the odometer but we spent a couple of hours servicing the car before a local restaurant for some Pork Posole in Kayenta using the 64 via Shiprocku

Day 19. Rocks

Post by Keith Clements »

Early start saw us away at 7:40 and along the scenic 98 with lots of pretty rocks
Image
Image
and Navahos selling pretty jewellery
Image

to Page. Here we learnt our chosen route was closed by a landslide so we made a 70 mile detour. We also learnt the Royal trail in the Grand Canyon was closed. But we passed over the Navaho bridge and the vermilion cliffs
Image

Image
where we bumped into Aus and US couples who had eaten in the same small mexican restaurant the night before. 200 miles apart. Amazingly we met them again 80 miles later walking around the North rim. They had Googled the Jowett the previous night so had taken video of us on the road.
417 miles covered going from 5000 to 8000 feet many times from mountain freeze to desert heat with lots of sight seeing.

The day went so well we found time to go through Zion park as the sun set. I will let the pictures show the unforgettable day we had. (When they eventually download) Now resting in Hurricane, Utah, after a tasty eat all you can Chinese.

Day 20. Nevada

Post by Keith Clements »

We only did 144 miles today most of that on Interstate, the first since a short stint in Oklahoma. After a lazy start, we made it to Las Vegas and decided to stay there rather than suffer the crowds returning to LA on Sunday evening. We are in a hotel at one end of the strip and so walked the whole 2 miles and back visiting most of the resorts en route. New York. Monte Carlo. Bellagio. Palazzo Harrahs. Huge shopping malls charging three times what they do in London. But had a good chat with a ex London barman in Bellagio where I eventually got a beer after suffering 6 dry states.

Booked into SmithandWollensky for a celebration meal a bit premature perhaps as we still have 280 miles across the Mohave desert and home tomorrow.

This is the route for days 17 to 20 from Dalhart to Las Vegas.

Day 21. Mohave desert and home.

Post by Keith Clements »

Away at 8 a.m. to get the cool part of the day. Turned off the I15 into the desert to see a sign beware of tortoise! Great road through a Joshua tree forest and into Kelso, an old railroad halt. Then off road into sand dunes then we had to go onto the I15 to get petrol and put 9 gallon in so we were running on fumes. Back onto Route 66 but the road surface was so bad we back tracked 12 miles to get back on the Interstate.
Now downing a beer at Scott's recalling the journey.
The route on the last day. Las vegas to Los Angeles

The whole story has been updated from Day 1 to Day 21 to add some detail and outline the roads we used.
I will redo all the pictures when I get home as I have over 2000!
Scott has a long list of things to investigate and fix so expect updates from him.

What a fantastic adventure Keith!
I am so impressed with what you have managed to do, you have travelled more miles in a Javelin on this trip than most of us have done in 20 years in the UK!
