George Mitchell's Javelins and Jupiters

Elsewhere (in the Bradford section of this discussion forum) we've been looking at the CD Bradfords and this led me to thinking about other things. Having visited George Mitchell's in Scotland with my dad in the mid 60s, I wonder what happened to all those Javelin and Jupiters. I remember especially a standard Javelin George had rebuilt with ‘hotted up’ engine, overdrive, rev counter, CD brake drums with 6.40 x 15â€

In amongst all of George's hoard there should be the rear end of my Jupiter, painted in green with rear lamps blended into body - no castings on the first bodies. There should be a '6' stamped into it on the flanges.

I now regret not bringing it to Oz. But times were different then,

Reading Pauls initial mail brought back a few memories. I remember ASV 938E although I cannot recall this being being totally " hotted up". His previous JAVELIN Reg O11 was modified with Alfin brake drums Rev counter but had a 4.1 ratio rear axle from an R1 but not an overdrive. This was written off near Kinross in the late sixties.

The other Javelin ASV 602C was rebuilt by Dave Wardrope and put on the road in 1965. This car is now owned by Scottish Section member Bill Bronsky from Uddingston, near Glasgow who is rebuilding the car.

Most of the Javelins that lay about Cleish that were beyond renovation were scrapped when George moved to Sherriffmuir. All the Jupiters that he did not sell before his move were taken up to Sherriffmuir. A few were later sold and he still has the odd one up there.

I visited George whilst on a Scottish holiday with my mother in the late 60's. I needed a spare sump after knocking the bottom out of my Javelin's on the 'switchback' Coatbridge to Tomintoul road, (I got 'home' on a bar of soap).

I remember George showing me a Javelin which I seem to recall was chassis number 13 or possibly 7. He poured the sump oil out of every car that came in, over the remains to 'preserve' them.

Did it?

I gather that he is still active on the Jowett scene. Will someone plesse pass on my best wishes? Does he ever visit this website? What stories he could tell!

Although I am no engineer (those who might have been following my nightmare with Javelin brakes and swivel pins will know what I mean!)
I am VERY interested in Jowett history and NEVER throw anything away (ask the wife!)
According to the JCC Rally programme of 1967 (Harrogate and I attended this in my Javelin- yes it ran at some time in the past!) George had a Javelin chassis number 8 Reg. JOM925. Wonder how she differed from the later production PAs?
Does anyone have contact with George now?

I was there (at Harrogate) too! So was Phil Dingle, another occasional contributor to Jowett.net and I am sure a regular 'watcher'. (Are you there Phil?).

We drove my Javelin up from Sussex / Surrey overnight, taking it in turns to drive.

I was asleep on the back seat when I woke up to an unexpectedly high pitched whine from the back axle. Looking at the speedo over Phil's shoulder I remember he was driving a lot faster than I usually did!

We took part in the driving test (in a car park down in a deep hollow I think) and I also think it was at this rally that the Scottish contingent arrived with the fronts of their vehicles all covered in 'Highland midges' with the headlamps barely visible.

I still have pictures of the very impressive 'lineup' in the display area.

Yes, Ian, I remember that trip too.
I think I know where my photographs are, but they are buried in the archives.
