Exhaust

Post by k. rogers »

Have any of you had experience with fitting a new club spares silencer recently? I've just fitted a mild steel one to replace a stainless one which had a hole in it! I have made sure the exhaust system isn't touching where it shouldn't, so I think the horrible metallic noise I'm getting from the exhaust when pulling away must be the silencer itself - very un-Javelin like, though I can hear the proper burble as well. Is this something that is likely to quieten down with the build up of carbon or is something amiss?

Hi Ken,

I know that you have made sure the exhaust isn't touching where it shouldn't, but the most likely cause of the noise is that the pipe is rattling on the chassis where it passes through the pipe within the chassis, when you pull away.

I use asbestos ( or what H&S allow us to call asbestos nowdays!) string or rope wound around the exhaust pipe where it passes through the chassis tube. I have secured the ends of the asbestos rope with copper wire, as there is not enough room to use a jubilee clip. If you want to try this, you can get the asbestos rope from shops selling wood-burning stoves. They use it around the glass doors.

I fitted a stainless system from Bill Lock, but had to trim the length by an inch or so, to get it to fit. I recommend giving the tail pipe a good 'waggling' and see if you can replicate the noise, and then perhaps use the asbestos rope idea?

All the best and we look forward to seeing you at Basingstoke....have a safe and pleasant journey!

Hi All

A week ago we were putting the exhaust system to the javelin. It is a tube made as from the original model with just a muffler.

Asbestos in the back, but you may hear a rebound in motor sound... we will investigate the material you suggest to coat the exhaust system in conflict zones.

Un saludo!

Having now ensured that the exhaust is definitely not touching where it shouldn't, I have resigned to the fact that the tinny 'rasp' I'm getting is from the new silencer and that I just hope it carbons up and mellows on the way to Basingstoke!

Hi Ken.
Just leave the choke out all the way. It'll 'carbon up' more quickly!
Mrs F. and I are almost packed (NOT), and we'll see you down there.
Regards,
Tony.

There is a marvellous picture in the 70's when I had a similar problem. Gerda De Bruyn had found a broom handle and was busily stuffing it up my exhaust pipe (sorry E2SA841's) when there was an almighty explosion and all the stuffing came out of the exhaust. Gerda knows how to do an enema on a Jup.

At least I know not to try that, then! I watched Moises video with interest, as his Javelin sounds very similar, ie quite resonant and raspy - it's obviously the price you pay for new exhaust!

About the video would be necessary to comment that the engine was cold, and suffered from condensation, but after a few minutes everything was correct, and work on preventing the contacts metal tube.
Publishes more video soon, I have heard that the javelin went up the ramp of the garage back without any problem, but does not stop anything!

Saludos!
