Lathes, drills and mills

Post by Forumadmin »

Thought I would start a new thread on this subject as this month's Jowetteer had Drummond facing a head on his mill and I have just acquired one of each.
My lathe is a Warco BH900G which has an 18.8 inch swing into the gap bed so should be able to handle all that the Jowett can throw at it.
My mill and drill is a Warco Minor which has a spindle axis to column of 202mm and spindle nose to table of 360mm. This might struggle with a block but we will see. By pure coincidence this is the same as Drummond's.

Pictures are in the gallery TOPIC here and show the equipment being unloaded by Peter, Chris and Jack. Thanks to Chris for arranging transport, as you can imagine they were not things that could be carried into the garage! If you are logged onto the Gallery you will see this.

The Milling Machine will do nearly ALL jobs / mods on each half block. A few jigs ( home made ) will evenually be required to set up angles etc.
With the Mill and a Lathe in the workshop your start to think differently when approaching jobs. Give us your experiences after a year ( or so ).

By the way, when you start using them they do get dirty !!!!!! and NEVER throw any bits of metal away. You never know when it will come in handy.
You now have the ability to recreate it.

WHAT HAVE YOU MADE YET ?????

Used the mill on Saturday to make a latch for the garage door.
I did have problems with the chuck dropping out of its Morse taper even after pressing in or hitting with copper mallet. Even cleaned both tapers with panel wipe. The taper does not have a thread to pull it tight like my collet chuck. Hopefully this will be solved with arrival of new collets.
I suspect part of the problem was using an end mill to cut a slot rather than a side mill which I eventually swapped over to. The end mill tended to pull the chuck out due to its spiral flutes.

Today many more tools I ordered arrived, so now have tilting vice, clamp set, live centre set, E32 collet set, end mill set, large imperial drill set.

So not many excuses now to get on and learn how to use it all.

Now, already you may have realised that you cannot use a Lathe Morse taper on a Milling Machine. A drawbar type Morse Taper Drill Chuck / milling cutter /flycutter fitting can only work correctly on a milling machine. Drawbars for Milling Machine use a 10 mm or 12 mm thread to pull the M3 or M4 morse taper into the holder.
A lathe type morse taper, M2 / M3 / M4 , depending on Machine design, will not , successfully, locate correctly during milling forces used.

I am surprised that the Milling Maching was not supplied with the correct Morse Taper fittings. You may now have them on order which will correct the location problem. With over 40 years of Lathe, Milling Machine and grinding experience of engineering the correct location of the cutting tool is paramount to a successful outcome. Always here to advise !!!!

Regarding Milling Cutters, I tend to use Slot Drills more than End Mills.

Looks like I will need to get an arbour/ adapter for the spare chuck which can be used with the draw bar. I will keep the other chuck for the lathe.

Alternatively I will us the E32 collets which do have the correct holder and arbour.
