Javelins/Jupiters, have a Salisbury "type" diff, who made them? Bradfords have a banjo diff that looks Jowett made, so did Jowetts MAKE the Salisbury type diff?
I ask as almost every car on the planet has a salisbury type diff , but it turns out not made necessarily made by Salisbury Axle company. Did the British auto industry have a main axle maker, that dominated the industry, as Lucas did to electrics, or Zenith to carbs?

Hi David,

I believe Salisbury Transmissions are still in business? They have a website and the Jowett 3HA axle is illustrated on their website, along with lots of other axles for different manufacturers.

I did hear a story that Jowett's bought-in the differential casing, complete with internals, from Salisbury, and then added the axle tubes etc. but this may not have been the case? Anyway, yes, Salisbury are still going strong and supply to a wide range of vehicle manufacturers. On our recent visit to the Morgan factory, we saw Salisbury axles being fitted to Morgans. So, in this way I see them as the 'Lucas' of the axle world?

Because there is a website http://www.salisburytransmissions.co.uk/ does not mean there is a company or it is the same as the one that made the axles.

So yes I guess the company still exists but as DANA. That is if the Salisbury axle company mentioned above is the same one!

So the use of the term Salisbury sometimes refers to the design, not the manufacturer.

Morgan does keep some spares for the 3HA. http://www.morgan-spares.com/plusfour/rearaxle.html Indeed in 1993 I bought mine from them after the diff failed on the Pirelli Marathon in Cortina.

Doing a bit more reading on net, Morgan, & Aston Martin seem to use the 3HA, also this diff seems to be a DANA 23 as used by Studebaker!
Can any North American members confirm? Given DANA own Salisbury anything may be possible.
