Work has also progressed with stripping the bodyshell & panels of many layers of paint - again the fruits of Peters hard work

Mean while - I have rebuilt the offside rear corner of the inner wing / bumper iron mounting
IMGP5916.JPG
Just the marked out section where the metal is quite thin to cut & replace then the bumper iron mounting can be redrilled / reattached

In turn this has highlighted several areas of concern
IMGP5923.JPG
Heavy rust pitting to the roof skin
IMGP5928.JPG
Extensive but poor use of lead loading to cover areas of rust & accident damage
IMGP5926.JPG
Poor attempts at repairing rust perferations - this is the lower section of the nearside front door and shall require the first 100mm to be cut out and new metal let in

Meanwhile back to the weldathon :( The tool tray upstand was thin to the leading edge had carried a couple of previous poor repairs
IMGP5919.JPG
The panel was sectioned and I cut / folded a new section - all that remained before welding it up was to replicate the swaging on the original panel
IMGP5931.JPG
With the help of a small jig that I made up - a section of broom handle and a suitable hammer
IMGP5932.JPG
with a little hammer & dolly work after this process I soon had something close to what was required

IMGP5937.JPG
New end tabs were fabricated & fitted to the upstand panel prior to final welding of the panel
IMGP5938.JPG
Final fitting checks on the tool tray lid prior to welding everything up
IMGP5939.JPG
All complete - I used spot welds where I could in order to replicate the original factory welding process (although none of this is seen) - new captive nuts were fitted where required - these retain the boot floor which is a plywood panel

IMGP5940.JPG
This is the lead loading that covers the join / seam between the rear panel and the rear wing shroud / support - it looks ok
IMGP5941.JPG
But its not - it has been bodged at some stage and the seam is rotting from the inside out

With the lead burnt off it can be seen that the seam has been gas welded together at some stage - not seen in the image is that the metal is thin / weak and has pinholes showing through
IMGP5944.JPG
effected area removed
IMGP5946.JPG
I made up two new sections by first folding the metal and then shrinking the edge to obtain the correct profile of the panel

The smaller sections requiring welding were now attended to at the rear of the car
IMGP6058.JPG
This is the roof skin just under the centre of the rear window aperture
IMGP6060.JPG
Rust removed by shot blasting
IMGP6068.JPG
Welded in / cleaned up - most of the repairs shall be lead loaded in order to make good any panel deviation in the bodywork

This is the lower centre of the offside inner wing where it meets the support rail
IMGP6065.JPG
IMGP6067.JPG
On closer inspection the support rail is holed through with rust although this localised to the upstand the bottom edge is solid
