The seller -Graham Parsons sent me ten high-res pictures of the engine for scrutiny. Drummond Black has copies too, but if you would like to see more of this engine I can fwd the pictures.Tony Fearn wrote:Ben, perhaps you should discuss with one or other of the Jav/Jup engine experts on here before parting with money for this engine. Bidding had ended for the item, but it didnt sell. try contacting the seller and see what he says.

- Your interest in the forum: Just bought Jimmy Shand's Jupiter from the dealer you mentioned, and yes, he made a couple of thousand. That can't be helped as I missed the Cunningham collection auction at Glamis. The dealer took it to Kent and sold it on ebay. Now I have to bring it home and get it back on the road. Ironically: home is Aberdeen. Back again!

Re: Jowett Jupiter 1953
distress message. Jupiter engine required. or recon-swap. or rebuild to include repairing or replacing cracked block.
Jimmy Sand II's Jupiter has a cracked block and I don't know where to find a replacement block or whole engine.
As the car is in garage-services, we could easily order an engine rebuild -but we need to know that the parts are coming.
Anyone able to offer crank-cases?

Ben, have you tried Jowett Car Spares? They almost certainly have crank cases that they can ship to whoever is rebuilding it.Ben wrote:distress message. Jupiter engine required. or recon-swap. or rebuild to include repairing or replacing cracked block.

Hi Chris.Chris Spencer wrote:Ben - Hopefully you are now finding the disadvantage and advantages of Jowett owning - on the down side they are not always straight forward, the parts can be elusive, most of the jobs are far from a quick fix and at times they can be quite frankly frustrating to the point that I have seen owners contemplate selling the dam thing (only for 30 seconds) they soon change their minds ! - Jowetts also cost money but name me a car that that you can restore or own for nothing and to be honest in real scheme of things - what I see (financially) owners of other makes and models throw at their cars it's a drop in the ocean !
On the up side you have very supportive and very helpful members who are ambitious to see yet another Jowett put back on to road - and I can see that you have a sense of humour - you going fit just right in with us ! - What's the big picture Ben ? - get it up and running and on the road ? - worry about the cosmetics / bodywork later ?
the Jupiter is at Shaun Bateman's workshop near Gatwick. Shaun awaits instructions to proceed with a full engine rebuild. Instructions I would give gladly if I could secure a supply of replacement parts including crank-case shells.
Shaun knows Ed, so discussion is enhanced, but I can't make-out where to go parts-shopping.
Any suggestions?
thanks

If you know what you need, post a list on here, and I'm sure suggestions for sources of parts will follow
It's also worth posting a 'wanted' ad in the back of the Jowetteer (club magazine) as well as keeping an eye out in the for sale ads in the mag. Then of course there is the Club spares section, and Bill Lock.
And if none of the above prove to have what you need, you'll find that there will be a Jupiter owner with several of that very thing in their garage... maybe not brand spanking new, but in a condition that can be made perfectly serviceable (this is the state that much of my car was in - I think I fettled with pretty much every single Lucas part on the car when we were putting mine together).

Bill does read this forum. Send him an email. Bill has been a member of the club for 47 years, I think. He can help with spares and can organise engine rebuilds. He has a number of 'associates' who assist in this.
It is worth reading about what needs to be done in Mike Allfrey's notes. That way you can make decisions on what you want. It is not as simple as getting another engine like you might do for some other cars. First you need to decide how much you are prepared to spend, then balance the spending so as not to waste money. Other topics on the forum discuss this.

Hi Ben,
As per my e-mail to you last week, the S/H engine I told you about is being collected tomorrow morning. So in a few days I should be in a position to see if it runs OK. I am assured that it is not seized and that there is some compression. I believe it has not been started for 15 years. So lets see what transpires.

Hello Dear Jowetteers
this is ben, jowett-behindthe-ears.
sorry to miss 'Group' for so long.
Shaun Bateman is repairing my Joop. He's a southerner you know.
After some personal distractions, once more he has again taken the jupiter in-hand afresh. anew.
We seem to have taken a few paces back from the last update, so there is no solution to the cracked block yet, but it seems the new priority is stopping, rather than getting-up-there.
A new set of brake cylinders is needed. Can anyone direct me?
Personally, I tend to check the parachute after jumping, but I suppose Shaun knows best.
1953 Jupiter brake cylinders, male and female, and anything else that you know must coincide: that's the top of the shopping-list today.
Right now I feel as though we're changing deck-chairs on the Titanic but perhaps this will get the rescue underway. ?
My everyday car: a Mitsubishi L200 suffered a minor 'con-rod through the crank-case' breakdown. So I looked on ebay for 'Mitsubishi short block for sale' and found one. A company in Slough that advertises every engine they've ever known.
At least five other ads offered 'Mitsubishi L200. Perfect -except for con-rod stuffed through crank-case'.
It's my lucky year !

Re: Jowett Jupiter 1953
Try Jowett car spares for brake bits. If the car has been laid up for a year or more the 6 cylinders and the master cylinder should be checked for corrosion and soggy rubbers. You might get away with a polish of the bores and pistons and new rubbers. If you do get ' new' cylinders make sure they are not old stock. Parachutes are not that effective in modern traffic which does not approach drag racing terminal velocities.

Re: Jowett Jupiter 1953
Hello Jupe fans
nothing has changed much about Jimmy Shand's jupiter. It still has a cracked block, although everything else is OK. (except the hood).
Much has changed about the owner though (me). He now has a cracked block.
SO: due to brain-damage, I have to pass this car over to someone who is more likely to finish it.
It's for sale. It's lying in the Horsham - Brighton area. Ed knows more about it than most.
Many people have solutions to cracked blocks. My wish was to source a replacement block. Drummond said that there may be enough demand to justify a new batch being made.
Anyway, if you're interested, please call me on 079 099 33330

Re: Jowett Jupiter 1953
Oh dear Ben, that is sad. Cracked blocks are a bit of a problem but may not be terminal. I have successfully welded 3 blocks over the years. Replacement second hand blocks may be available and give me a few months and I may be able to sort one. JCS and others might be able to help. Rebuilding the engine with a new block does require care, although I have done it many times during the rallying and racing era in rapid time (and just hoped)!
Old cars do require a lot of perseverence, but they will reward you in the end.
If you want to contact me and I will see what I can do. After the Basingstoke Rally I might be able to find some time to rebuild an engine.

Re: Jowett Jupiter 1953
I don't know if there's anyone left following this slow story, but here's the latest:
Jimmy Shand's son, Jimmy Shand has confirmed that the Jupiter did belong to the great squeezebox star himself.
FJR 759 is still sitting near Gatwick, waiting for a solution to the cracked block. Shaun Bateman (good man with Jupiters) has done a lot of tidying and sorted the brakes.
So this vessel has gone from being a risky unknown, to a less-risky known entity. But I still have to sell it. My own cracked block (had brain-surgery recently) means that I should hand-over the Joop to someone who will finish the job. I'm looking for OIRO £9K.
That means you can have it for £8000.
Please contact me by email or phone. This is a great blog, but I keep losing it from my mind.

Sorry Keith,
didn't mean to post the picture twice.
You could run a competition to identify the surrounding items though.
Is that Jimmy Shand's stuffed horse?
