1923 Jowetts

Post by Jack »

Evening All,

I am working on a bit of a new idea, and need to know what cars Jowett were manufacturing in 1923.

So far it looks like Sevens, which have a Sport and Long Tourer variant - were there other models available in 1923, and if so what were they? Were they

Now the next (rather odd) question - there are many other cars of a similar period that look broadly similar to the Seven. Can anyone advise on other cars that were the same body shape and similar design?

No promises, but if there are similar cars (and even if there aren't) we might have an interesting new product for Jowett enthusiasts next year.

Thanks in advance - this is an area of Jowett history I really don't know much about and keen to learn.

Jack.

Jaack. for the 1923 model year ( announced Oct '22 inte long chassis was i;ntrodued - jsut 2 moels one long anad one short. The sports odel of which only 15 weremade was not introduced until the '28 season.

Uts well worth gtting hold of a copy of the Complete JOwett History if you can ( they do come up on ebay but at a high price!) The road test etc reprint book I published in 1985 contains stuff going back to 1921 and again they come up on ebay from time to time.

As to others of similer apearence there were many and those that come to mind are the BSA 10 1921 - 25 ish Hotchkiss v twin as later used on BSA 3 wheeler. Rover 8. air cololed flat twin 998cc 1919 - 25. Yorkshire built Bowser '22-23 100cc flat twin, Ariel 9 '22 '25 996 flat twin. There were many more similer in shape but with often large,r4 cyl engines.

Thanks George. This is just what I need.

So the Sports model wasn't on the road in 1923? Or might have been on the road after October '23?

I think Keith will have the complete history book, will check later this week. Another one to add to the list of bath time reading.

On the appearance, it is much more important that externally they look similar - the engine layout not such a concern. I suppose the question really is what other cars could be easily mistaken for a Jowett Seven as it drives past.

There was a vintage AC sports tourer on 'Downton Abbey' last night, and from rear it could be mistaken for almost any early 20's sports tourers.

Jack - a possible bit of confusion over the sports model being listed in 1923.. You may well be thinking of the one off 'sports' made to the order of Major Johnson in 1923 ( which has survived and is now owned by Mik KO) The catalogued sports model was as Isaid listedonly in 1928 and did not catch on!

There is a nice period photo of major johnsons car along with a 'rover air cooled eight' on pge 132 of teh complete jowett history.( and one of teh 1928 sports on page 45.)
