Post by Chris Spencer »

The North of the Thames gang are off to Goodwood Revival next weekend (Fri / Sat / Sun) - Keith, Amy. Jack, Sharon, myself & our visitor from California - Scott. Keith shall be pressing the Javelin into service as one of the circuits 'Glam Cabs' which ferry guests around the spectator areas - we all going dressed in 1950's period costume so they will be a few images to giggle at once we get back and post them to JT - if you are planning a visit on any of the days please give one of us a call and we can meet up for a drink / chat (send a return post if you are unsure of our mobile contact numbers and we can forward them on to you)

Assuming I survive a day at the Wales Rally on the Saturday, I should also be there on Sunday (sadly still sans Long Four) with my son James.

I/we will try to catch up with you - probably via Glam Cabs. Either way, I hope it keeps fine for us all!

Scott and I prepared the Javelin and loaded it up with tents yesterday. Then attention turned to the SC whose handbrake was ineffective. First noticed grease coming from the brake plate. We think the hub had been over greased as we took the oil seal off and it seemed correct. The run today will see if that is correct. Then we played with handbrake adjustment which would just not operate one wheel. First adjusted the length of the rods but although better , was still not good. Checking the ramp inside the rear cylinder showed no problem. Eventually I adjusted the other rod and it now seems OK. Just hope we do not overheat the rear wheel again.

Got back from Goodwood late Sunday night. It is hard to describe how incredible this event is. Imagine getting 100,000 people to play dress up for three days, while the pits get filled with a couple hundred cars worth over a half a billion dollars. Not to mention some really great racing on a pretty interesting coursr. Did I forget to mention the vintage and WW2 warplanes flying overhead, plus the thousand or so pre-1966 cars parked in the field? Oh, I also forgot the hundreds of venors selling everything from parts, to Cobras to all sorts of vintage clothing.

I hung out with Keith at the Glam Cab area and bumped into a friend from Los Angeles who was driving a car in the races.

Utterly spectacular.

Some photos in gallery here
My car of the show in the end was the orange Tatra with its double diffuser. It really did quite well in the racing.

Initialy the 1937 Alfa Romeo streamliner was my favourite but it performed very badly in the racing.

Here are Sue and Trevor Spero with Scott.

So, we know that Jupiters raced at Goodwood "in period". Are we likely to see one in a race at the Revival in the future, or has it already happened?

OK, I had forgotten about that occasion. However R1's never appeared at Goodwood, but standard body Jupiters did, so a good example ought to be a qualified entrant. Depending on the direction that the Revival is taking, possibly a standard car would not be exalted enough? It probably depends on what the paying punter wants to see. . .

Do we know any details about the cars that did? Then we would have a fighting chance of getting an invite.

Don't Goodwood hold any records of entry lists?

Do old Goodwood programmes ever appear on eBay?

I am looking for my copy at the moment, but I know that the Profile Publication on the Javelin and Jupiter has a picture of a standard bodied Jupiter navigating the chicane at Goodwood in 1952. The text identifies who the driver (and likely also the owner) is and what the event was.
