Javelin trunk not close

Post by Moises Jr. »

Hello, my father continued the process of restoration of the Javelin, has doubts with insulating rubber seal located on the trunk, it seems that this does not close for being too big, if you remove the rubber no problem to close.

It would be interesting to see a photo of your boot and insulating systems serve as a great help.

A greeting from Spain

Hi Moises,

Is he using a Javelin boot seal from the spares section, or a seal from somewhere else?

It is likely that the seal is too large or too solid for the gap it fills. Try either a softer seal or a smaller profile - my question above is because the one from JCS should be exactly right size and compressibility for the gap and purpose.

Recently I fitted a JCS bootlid seal successfully . First of all it has to be glued to the lid, not the body . This is difficult to do unless the lid is removed and laid on a soft blanket to avoid harming the paintwork. In my case I had to remove the lid to repair major cracks in the aluminium interior casing caused by the lid twisting at the O/S hinge . I used evostick to ensure the seal was securely attached and restuck any loose sections . Note that there is no seal on the straight edge at the rear of the lid .
I then reattached the lid to the hinges and fitted the telescopic stay which is really the cause of the twisting and cracking . The slotted holes in the hinge plates allow for adjustment . I had to adjust the boot catch to fit and have had no further trouble . Bob Lintott

For seals I use Tigerseal now - now used by some companies to attach body panels to cars! It is incredibly strong, and remains flexible for a long time. Not cheap, but ideal if you have any trouble getting a seal to stick properly.

Jack ,Tigerseal sounds good. i found that the boot lid seal is quite heavy and in situ, kept falling off the lid , maybe this would be more successful.. regards Bob

An alternative to Tigerseal is Sikaflex 221. (eBay has some)

Its use is carefully controlled in the Jowett Health and Beauty Shop as we know that body parts of the human variety might also get attached.

I just looked at the strip seal on the boot lid of my Javelin, which I installed recently. The strip I used is an about 135degree angle to fit in to the flange on the boot lid and is about 18mm across in total. Each side of the angle is about 10mm across.

I found it fitted perfectly and the bootlid catch needed only a small adjustment . I obtained the strip from Jowett Car Spares, they recently had a quantity produced. I suggest you contact them --per the Jowetter-- . regards Bob Lintott
