Ignition parts

Post by ian Howell »

I have so far been unable to find any part numbers on the distributor, its 'points', or its cover on my 1930 Long Four.

This information is also missing from the Jowett Spare Parts lists (because they are Lucas items?) and from Bob Jones' very useful vintage data sheets (or at least the version I have).

Are these ONLY Lucas items or were there equivalent items from - say - Delco?

Also, there is a circular recess in the lower body of my distributor - presumably for the condenser / capacitor, but it is HUGE when compared with modern components. Again, is the original item known / available?

My ignition all works OK but I would like to have spares -'just in case'.

I have had some useful feedback in a private message, giving me Lucas part numbers, however when I looked them up I found some significant differences between mine and the parts illustrated in catalogues.

The moving METAL contact arm on mine has a sort of double bend in the middle which holds a fibre peg that in turn works off the distributor cam. On the catalog illustrations this is a moulding in the Bakelite? arm. OK so far, BUT. . .

On mine the contact arm is spring loaded by means of a COILED SPRING around the pivot post (See picture below).

On the catalogue illustrations the spring is a LEAF TYPE which goes around the inside of the distributor body clockwise, AWAY from the location of the electrical connection.

Is this perhaps NOT the original type of distributor for a 1930 car, or possibly one from an earlier model?

Is there a way to make the available contact arms fit?

Does anyone have a part number for 'my' contact arm / set?

Has anyone else got this type of distributor?
