An interesting, and no doubt rare item.

Is that the rear lamp from a standard Javelin (as opposed to deluxe) or from a specific period?

The one on our car looks like this:

Not seen them with red sections, perhaps I've not been paying attention at the rallies etc. I assume that the light is to illuminate the number plate when fitted to the boot lid instead of the rear bumper? If so, what is the red bit for, a fog light, sidelight or brake light?

This rear light would suit my 1950 De Luxe Javelin.

Finally my lack of technical knowledge has been of use to someone :D

Robin, if you want to buy it and get it shipped to me we can happily forward it to you (or hang on to it for you if you have plans to be in the UK any time soon?) - I know some ebayers don't want to ship internationally or charge a lot of money to do so. Let me know if you need me.

Thanks for the offer. I do have one, but I had to paint the inside. I wil buy this one if the bidding doesn't get silly, and I will see what the shipping costs.

Very interesting illustration of the multitude of combinations Jowett used over quite a brief period, further complicated by restorers fitting parts from various other cars. According to records Jack's excellent looking Javelin LDD 593 is E1 PC19240 D , a Deluxe model. His picture shows the bumper mounted number plate with the light on the plinth just illuminating the plate . Later deluxe cars had a Lucas combined reversing light and plate light on the plinth. Perhaps the boot mounted light , which I thought was a feature of standard cars to illuminate the square plate on the boot lid , is a reversing light on LDD? The ebay item is part red which would indicate a brake light ? May be other cars were fitted with these lights for that purpose .

My own Javelin E2 PD 22752 D came part restored with standard bumpers --now replaced with Deluxe - and a square plate on the boot lid with a plain Lucas light below it just illuminating the plate . I have no reversing light and no sign of a switch on the gearbox nor can I find any reference to the switch in the parts manual. Help? I recall the combined plinth mounted reversing light on the first Javelin I owned in the late 1950s( an E2PD) was so dim it was neccessary to go round the rear of the car to see if it was on! Cured by wiring up a Lucas spotlight at the rear instead.

Hi Bob,

Hopefully I can be of some vague use twice in one thread, which would probably be a new record for me. The switch for the reversing light is (I think) activated by hitting a switch that the gear change bumps into when changing into reverse- at least I know it is on a Jupiter, and being the same engine and gearbox I can only assume they did the same on the Javelin - it has a ball bearing which the arm actually hits, and has to be adjusted quite carefully once fitted. I remember doing this on the Jupiter, and can put my hand straight on it, but can't see a photo anywhere to hand that I can share.

Close to the arrow showing "Gear Operating Shaft" is where I think it should be, on a little bracket so that when reverse is engaged it hits the switch. Unfortunately the diagram doesn't show it.

Dear Jack, I recall that my original Javelin VTW 333 had the switch you describe . I recently had a recon. gearbox fitted to the current PHU 317, there was no sign of a switch but I did find a pair of wires unattached which may have been the remains ! Perhaps I will install an illuminated switch on the dashboard instead. Your Javelin looks superb , has it been rebuilt? regards Bob

Hi Bob, that's not my Javelin, just a pic from Google to show what I mean. A small switch on the dashboard would work fine, and might be a bit more reliable than one which is hit by the mechanism on the gearbox when reverse is engaged. It would be really neat if you could find a way to rig it into the button on the gearlever - no idea whether that is possible, I guess you could drop it out of reverse without pushing the button, which would leave the light on in forward gears.

Jack, Sorry about the mistaken identity, in the 2008 list LDD is shown in the Part 2 with no identified owner. Not sure about fitting a switch on the reverse button rod etc , this system is delicate as it is ! regards Bob

Hi Bob if you require a Gearbox Switch for Reverse, I have one going spare, could bring it to the rally if you're not in a hurry.

Regards

The boot lamp eBay auction has ended. Let's hope it's gone to a good home. Was it you?
