Jowett Industrial Engine Photo Request

Post by Mike Allfrey »

G'dday from The Becoming Warmer South,

Does anyone have a good photograph of a WW II Jowett stationary/industrial engine. It is my intention to put together some information on these now rare engines.

Jowett Cars Limited produced a large number of their twin-cylinder engine in a handsome tubular frame. The engines were direct coupled to either a water pump, or a generator. These units were portable, probably by four fit men, and were used mainly in bombed out areas to provide useful pumping capacity to pump rain water from bomb craters. I remember there was one such engine at the no longer used Hixon Aerodrome between Stafford and Uttoxeter, in the early 1960s. It was reportedly used for pumping out bomb craters in the runways, prior to filling the craters in.

In the late 1960s I saw a huge stack of the Jowett engines, all new, in a scrapyard in Stone, Staffordshire. I was running my Jupiter at the time, so I was quite interested. I remember the tubular frame having a small toolbox attached. In the toolboxes were greased canvas rolls containing a set of piston rings, inlet and exhaust valves, KLG or Lodge sparking plugs and points for the magneto. In addition to the spares, there was a useful range of spanners, screwdriver, pliers and a sparking plug box spanner - all greased and water protected. I wrote to George Mitchell about the stockpile of these engines, but received no reply.

It would be appreciated if a scanned photo could be sent to me. I have looked in all of my Jowett literature and there is no photo in any of the books. Has anyone out there had any experience in using these engines?

Regards to all of you,

Mike Allfrey.

Mike: -

I am afraid I cannot add much to your research except possibly a 'red herring'.

Many years ago (about 25) I acquired a Jowett stationary engine with the following interesting(?) points: -

It was in an angle iron frame - not tubular steel.

It was painted 'army green' and that appeared to be the original colour.

It was fitted with a one-piece pulley with three 'V' grooves - about 'B' section from memory - and a flat section. This compound pulley was in turn fitted with a centrifugal clutch so that the engine could be started without having to drag round whatever the belts were driving. The whole pulley assembly was mounted after a HUGE solid bronze pedestal bearing - again apparently original.

There was a 'fixed' starting handle.

The petrol tank was rectangular with rounded corners and an integral fuel contents guage.

I was told it had been used for many years in a local woodworker's factory.

Sadly I took no photographs and did not even record the engine number, but from memory it looked very much like the engine on the Bradford I had owned previously, but with the carburettor controlled by an internal centrifugal governor but with an external spring to adjust the engine speed.

Hope this sheds light rather than fog!

I scanned a copy of the W.P. Instruction manual, which I was given, and it is in the Legacy section of Jowett Gallery. There is a picture in there and some drawings.

Mike, I have one of the engines and its original generator. It is in bits (quite big bits) at the moment and the engine is not very accessible. The generator is! I keep falling over the thing. Mine has the remains of military numbers stencilled on it.
Have you contacted Henry Sanderson the UK industrial engine registrar?

Hi Mike,

I have one of these generators, kindly donated by Tony Pluckrose earlier this year.

So far as I have been able to gather, Jowett's made several versions. Mine is a 160v DC 50amp generator. However, I have also got parts from a saw bench, with a massive multiple 'V' belt flywheel and the engine from what I believe was a pump.

However, the generator is totally complete. My article for the Jowetteer should be printed soon, describing work so far in getting her running. I now have her running and generating volts!

As you say, the generator comes in a frame. This frame is mostly angle iron, with two tubes running the length of the frame down which you could probably slide two round bars and then lift the generator by four ( strong! ) men. There are two tool boxes an integral fuel tank and a control box for the electrical connections, fuses, meters and electrical controls.

Mine is painted in 'Army Green' and, from a plate on the top tool box, was apparently reconditioned in 1960. This plate describes the undersizes on the engine bearings, although the pistons are recorded as 'standard'.

I have been cleaning the whole unit and preparing a trailer for it, as a portable display. It is not yet in a condition to take finished photos, but it currently would show 'work in progress.

She starts easily and runs on the integral governor. However, if you overide the governor, she will tick over very slowly and smoothly, still showing a full 60lbs oil pressure.

I have seen pictures of similar generators in Jowett's 'War Production Record'.

I hope this helps?

All the best,

David

Hi Mike,

I have taken four photos of my generator, that I mentioned above.

I have tried to attach them to this post, but received the following message :-

The image must be at least 0 pixels wide, 0 pixels high and at most 1024 pixels wide and 1024 pixels high. The submitted image is 1600 pixels wide and 1200 pixels high.

So, I have tried but have been beaten by the system!

If you like, my e-mail address is davidsmorris@hotmail.com and if you could send me yours, I could easily use that route.

All the best,

David

Hello David.

I had the same problem re. photos, but my son Richard listed what I should do to compress them so that they can be added to a post in JowettTalk.

if you want the 'how to do it' then send a PM. Of course it's dependent on what programmes you have on your computer.

Hasn't K.C. already addressed this in one of his posts? Perhaps he can point you to it.

Tony.

P.S. We're all keen to see your photos.

If you go to: http://www.imageshack.us/ you can upload your pictures to a forum. Just Browse for the photo in your computer, click upload and then copy the URL for forums and paste it into your message. The program can resize pictures for forums.

The proper place for these pictures is the Gallery where you can store uncompressed and organise them!

Dear Mike and everyone,

Many thanks for all your help. I have, I hope, attached three photos ( the most I was allowed to do ) of the generator. I should like to thank Hilary Stone, who helped me resize them. I should point out that the generator is in the process of being repainted and will hopefully appear on a smaller trailer in the right shade of 'MoD Green'!

I have also put the four original photos onto Jowett Gallery, as recommended.

I hope this helps?

All the best,

David
