13 14 August Car wanted for show
URGENT. Sent to Southern Section Sec, So please conatact Ian Roxburgh. If you can provide a car.
Hello, as part of Southbank Centre's celebrations of the 60th anniversary of the Festival of Britain, I am just finishing off planning a weekend of free events at the Royal Festival Hall on 13 & 14 August. We are exploring one of the original festival's themes - Power & Production. I know it's now very short notice, but I wondered if you had a member in he London area who would be interested to show a Jowett Jupiter or another model that would have been on the market in 1951? We have a number of vintage and contemporary vehicles on display, but I think there is a gap that a Jowett could helpfully fill!

Re: Llandrindod Wells
Talking of shows, have the entry forms for Llandrindod Wells been sent out yet or are they on the website somewhere?
There was nothing like this in my last Jowetteer - maybe I was missed out?
I have made the front doors for my Long Four (it was sans doors at Wakefield) and I am going to collect the ash plank for the back doors on friday.
Just a few metalwork panels and some glass . . . .

Maybe the organising committee are just inviting themselves and don't want any other members there - or maybe just word of mouth invited members only - who knows ? - But has the saying goes ' An event without a sign is a sign of a non event' !

Already posted assuming there would be a response: http://www.jowett.net/forum/viewtopic.p ... 194#p11194 - are any of the organising committee online? All I know is through word of mouth and mention, and a notice in the Jowetteer telling us the location and dates.Chris Spencer wrote:Maybe the organising committee are just inviting themselves and don't want any other members there - or maybe just word of mouth invited members only - who knows ? - But has the saying goes ' An event without a sign is a sign of a non event' !
It is a concern that we have lots of notices telling us when the event is, but no idea what to expect when we get there. It is a novel approach to marketing...
For those who own Jowetts but have not joined the club, perhaps with some more info on the forum they might just find details of the event and sign up to join the club to be a part of it. That was my hope, anyway.
Jack.

As far as I can recall, details and entry forms for the Welsh Rally will be in the next issue of the Jowetteer. Also, I think you need to bear in mind that it is very much a skeleton committee organising next year's rally as no section came forward to volunteer to do so, therefore the same service cannot possibly be expected from such a small group! As it is, there are quite a lot of existing members who don't attend the annual weekends, so I fail to see why anyone with a Jowett who doesn't see the need to join the club with all its benefits would be pursuaded to do so by the prospect of the annual rally.

I openly volunteered my services at a executive committee meeting over a year ago - I also made it quite clear that I had several years on the ground experience of large event organising vehicle rallies / festivals etc - I also informed our vice chairman by e mail of that fact - to date the response has been a deafening nil !!

Re: Llandrindod Wells
Now there's a good idea. Forumadmin, can we look at getting the forms for the annual rally e-enabled please? I'd find it much simpler to fill in a form online and email it to whoever is appropriate. Obviously if it was critical I suppose I could print it out, but emailing a completed form and sending payment via paypal would be ideal.ian Howell wrote:Talking of shows, have the entry forms for Llandrindod Wells been sent out yet or are they on the website somewhere?
I'll open a new topic in the appropriate forum section anyway.
Fabulous - so you'll have it done in time for plenty of practice runs before next May thenI have made the front doors for my Long Four (it was sans doors at Wakefield) and I am going to collect the ash plank for the back doors on friday.

Re: 13 14 August Car wanted for show
That's the plan - to get it to Llandrindod Wells on its' own four paws. My daughter owns a hotel about 20 miles away, so my accommodation is sorted!
Llandrindod Wells is mentioned in Noel Stokoe's book 'Sporting Jowetts' (page 162) where it was on the Monte Carlo route in 1951, and I believe other years too. Contestants were entertained by the Mayor with souvenir booklets illustrating the station and council offices! Certainly one of the Economy Runs also went through this area as someone managed a 14 mile downhill 'cruise' with no engine in Mynydd Epynt (happens to be near my daughter's place too!). I wonder if something similar could be included in any 'Scenic Run'? Bwlch-y-Groes is also mentioned but so far I have found four places with this name and none seem to fit any photographs I hvae seen. Anyone know the 'official' route?
I believe there is also a museum in the town with motoring or Jowett related interest. I will try to find out more.
I would LOVE to send pictures of progress on the Long Four, but the real visible progress has only been the two front doors and I CAN'T GET THE CAR OUT OF THE GARAGE to take pictures because my SON HAS IMMOBILISED HIS CAPRI on axle stands in the driveway while he fits a 5 litre engine, competition clutch and flywheel, bigger radiator and a gearbox to match.
I should collect another ash plank this week to make the frames for the rear doors, and I want to do a bit of 'fettling' to the 'A' posts to improve door fit.
Trouble is - I am working away from home for two weeks and then we are going back to Wales for 3 weeks, so not much progress until September. Watch this space (Well Pre-War space anyway).

UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE
To reply regarding Rally 2012, booking forms for Llandrindod Wells will be sent out with the September Jowetteer. From that issue onwards Rally Reports will be forthcoming. I am tasked with receiving all bookings and issuing invoices and, as the club financial year ended on July 31st , August is used exclusively to prepare the club accounts, get them audited and prepared for the September Exec and for issue with the October Jowetteer prior the the Annual General Meeting in mid October. The booking form is currently being modified and we hope that there will be an on-line version as well as going out with the magazine.

Great news Drummond. Thanks for the update, and all the work you and the team are putting in to the rally and the club behind the scenes. It is easy for us to forget how much work is involved in making something like this happen, and if you need volunteers I am sure there are many who will step forward to assist with any aspect of rally organisation.Drummond Black wrote:UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE

Few photos:

Right in the centre of London, a new audience perhaps for our cars, with visitors to the centre, passing tourists, most people in the area won't have a car, let alone a 1950s car:

Jack.

Re: 13 14 August Car wanted for show
This topic seems to be drifting towards the 'official' one for the Llandrindod Wells rally! Perhaps I should copy it to the correct Topic.
Anyway, I have made the following recent (and earlier) observations:-
The recent sad loss of Bill Boddy who lived in the Llandrindod Wells area. Many of us will have read with pleasure his many motoring articles and publications over many years (he did the Profile Publication on the CGSS Amilcar - which I have in storage awaiting attention).
On page 162 of Noel Stokoe's ' Sporting Jowetts' it states that the 1951 Monte Carlo Rally (and I suspect others) went through Llandrindod Wells and that the Mayor gave each entrant a copy of the town guidebook. I wonder if a replica these - or at least a current version - could form part of the 'Welcome Pack' that we have all come to know and look forward to? (A bit tongue-in-cheek this - see the 'flanour' of the entry in Sporting Jowetts!).
Next, I wonder if the Royal Automobile Club would be able to let us know the route that the 'Monte' took through Wales? Perhaps this - or part of it - could be incorporated in any 'Scenic Run' that may be planned?
Whilst this could not in any way be competitive - no racing etc. - it might be fun to time the various entrants and give awards to the one closest to the average times for their class?
On page 69 of the August issue of The Automobile, Michael Worthington-Williams states ' I've always fancied a Jowett . . . '
Michael Worthington-Williams lives relatively near to Llandrindod Wells. Perhaps he could be persuaded to visit us there - perhaps for the formal dinner?
I hope this may add to the food for thought, but I bet someone, somewhere has already spotted most of these!
Thoughts please.
