Peter, if you post the link to the item instead of item number, it means others can follow the link and see some of the info even after the auction has ended.

Might be useful for some - otherwise if you just type in the item number to search it comes up with zero results once the auction ends.

Personally, I am very surprised at the price. I can't say I know much about pre-war cars, but that seems very reasonable for a car in the condition shown with a fresh MOT. Anyone else with a bit more experience got thoughts on price for this?

It is interesting to note that
1. the capacity is given as 1005cc (i.e. that of a Bradford engine against the 946cc of an ''8'

2. there are no pics of the underbonnet/engine etc.

CAn't find it in any of the club registers so presumably a non member owns it ? along with the Lanchester 10 in the pics.

i sent a message to the vender via ebay aasking for engine number & saying I was a bit puzzled about the 1005cc as the capacity of an '8' is 946cc.. I didn't mention the bradford being 1005cc. I also suggested that some under bonnet pics would be helpful.

I recieved the curt response that the engine is the one it left the factory with and that ebay had put in the 1005cc.

I fi;nd it very hard to believe that ebay would add an engine capacity & even harder to believe that they would go for 1005cc.. I also note that the vendor did not either deny it is 1005cc or confirm that it is 946cc. This leaves various possibilities - that it is fitted with a CA bradford engine which is virtually same as very late '39. That it is ori;ginal engine but fitted with bradford pots & pistons which was a aconversion carried out by a number of Jowett agents early post war.

Having said that it looks in very nice condition & the price seems reasonable , but I can't understand the sellers reluctance to di;sclose engine number & underbonnet photos.

does anybody have knowledge of this car?

This was the 8 that used to belong to Tim Lane and subsequently Colin Durham and was at the Basingstoke Rally in 2005(?). I believe it also belonged to Bill Lock before that, but might be wrong. I remember it being a superb example when I saw it at Basingstoke and almost cannot believe the low price if it is still as good! I believe the vendor in that ebay does try to categorize things like engine capacities so I think we should give him the benefit of the doubt, though an engine number should be easy enough for him to quote which would clarify things!

Further to my last script, did you notice that the photos of the 8 were taken in 2004? I find that very odd and begs the question what's the car like now?

which could be because of change of pots to CA Bradford in the early post war period whcih was declared as a change of capacity by a law abiding owner! or it could mean a Braadford engine that the present owner honestly believes is the original. I also note that noted the date of the photos which leaves abig question mark re current condition etc which I suppose would only be resolved by somebody having a look & reporting back. However not wishing to be unfair to the vendor the price is reasonable for an eight in the condition described.

The date on the pics is 15/2/2004 - but if you look closely the trees in the background are in leaf and there is a pot of petunias in flower by the front door. I think it is VERY unlikely that petunias will be flowering in Gateshead in February

. . . and just goes to show how a little mistake can raise suspicion among potential buyers and possibly impede the sale!
But, I must say there's been some great "detective-ing" going on . . . anyone want to take over Inspector Morses' job?
